Opéra National de Lyon is an opera company in Lyon, France which performs in the Nouvel Opéra, a modernized version in 1993 of the original 1831 opera house. The inaugural performance of François-Adrien Boïeldieu's La Dame blanche was given on 1 July 1831. The Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries saw some significant French premieres of major operas including Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger in 1896, Giordano's Andre Chenier in the following year, and Moussorgsky's Boris Godunov in 1913. In addition, many world premieres such as Arnold Schoenberg's Erwartung (1967) have been presented. In the years after the 1969 appointment of Louis Erlo as general director, many innovative productions and premieres of both French operas and Twentieth Century operas have been staged. Two significant French artists who have been associated with the Opéra in recent years are the stage director, Laurent Pelly, and the soprano, Natalie Dessay. Past principal conductors at the company have included André Cluytens, John Eliot Gardiner, Kent Nagano, Louis Langrée, and Iván Fischer. Since 2008, the principal conductor is Kazushi Ono, with an initial contract of 5 years. At the front of the Opéra are 8 statues of the Muses, but Urania is missing. There are two major reasons for the omission: symmetry, and the fact that Urania is not related to the arts performed in the Opéra.

Basilique de Notre Dame

The Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière sits high atop the Fourvière Hill in Lyon, France. It was built between 1872 and 1876 in a neo-Byzantine style and offers a magnificent view over the city. Like the Sacré-Coeur in Paris, Lyon's basilica was built to underline the might of the Roman Catholic Church after the Prussian defeat of France in 1870 and the birth of the anticlerical Third Republic. Both basilicas also have in common a neo-Byzantine style and hilltop site. The Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière was built between 1872 and 1876 over an ancient Roman forum and next to the existing Chapel of the Virgin. It was designed by architect Pierre Bossan of Lyon, who also designed the city's Église Saint-Georges. Visible from all over the city, the gleaming white Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière rises like a fortress on Fourvière Hill, with slender turrets on its four corners and crenellated walls. A gilded statue of the Virgin surmounts the bell tower. This relatively austere exterior contrasts with the richly decorated interior, which was intended to demonstrate the Church's wealth and power (although in reality, it had only the former). Gilt, marble work, stained glass windows, and colored mosaics cover virtually every surface. Beneath the main level is the crypt of Saint-Jean, which is unusually large and well-lit. Adjoining the basilica is the ancient Chapel of the Virgin and a terrace that provides a panoramic view of the cathedral and city of Lyon. An even better view can be had by climbing 287 steps to the basilica observatory. Also nearby are the gardens of Rosaire, designed by Bossan, and the pleasant Hauteurs Park.

It is also the largest pedestrian square of Europe,[1] the places mentioned above can accommodate vehicles, as opposed to the Place Bellecour. In the middle is a statue of king Louis XIV mounted on a horse, made by François-Frédéric Lemot in 1825.[1] Another statue, representing the Petit Prince and Antoine de Saint-Exupery, is located at the west end of the square. Two pavilions are also on the square. The first houses the tourist information office of Lyon, the second an art gallery. The square belongs to the zone classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

To better understand the history of Lyon, you have to start with this museum on the hill of Fourvière. It shows the prehistory and the proto-history of the Lyonnaise region, as well as the birth of Lyon (43BC) up until the 7th century. The museum is made of up 17 areas with 17 different themes - ceramics, glassware, tools, objects showing domestic life, belief systems relating to death, the army, religion, Roman Gaul circus games. More uniquely to Lyon, the key pieces are sarcophagus of the 3rd century, a processional chariot (700BC), which was found intact (area 1), the engraved Claudian table, which is fundamental for the understanding of the Roman state (area 4). There is also a lunar and solar calendar in the Gaelic language but using Latin characters, which allowed them to regulate religious life (area 9) and mosaics of circus games (chariot races), which are truly extraordinary (area 10). You can see that these give a good representation of what Lyonnais e life would have been like under Roman occupation. Worth seeing in the surroundings is the Gaelic-Roman site of the large theatre and the Odeon. The shop sells books, magazines, mock-ups, and copies of objets d'art. On top of this there is a workshop to occupy the youngest of children. Open Hours: 9:30a-noon & 2p-6p W-F Contact: +33 4 7238 8190

The Amphitheater of the Three Gauls (Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules) is the lesser known of two ancient Roman sites in Lyon. (The other is the Théâtres Romains de Fourvière complex near the basilica.) The amphitheater derives its name from ancient Lyon's role as the capital of the Three Gauls (Lugdunensis, Belgica, and Aquitania), three regions of Roman France. At the time of its construction around 19 BC, the Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules was the centerpiece of Condate, a Gallic village that predated the arrival of the Romans by centuries. It would have had room for 20,000 people at one time. Various accounts have members of Gallic tribes meeting here in the earliest example of a parliamentary system. Based on that information, France's 2,000th anniversary was celebrated in Lyon in 1989. It was at this amphitheater that the first Christian martyrs in Lyon were thrown to the lions in 177 AD. The most famous martyr to suffer here was St. Blandine. According to tradition, Blandine was thrown into the amphitheatre with the lions, but they refused to eat her. The lions were replaced by a bull, which also refused to harm her. Finally, Roman soldiers took matters into their own hands and killed her with their swords.

Gare de la Part-Dieu (English: Part-Dieu railway station) is the primary railway station in Lyon, France. The station was constructed in 1978 as part of the new Part-Dieu urban neighbourhood project. As the planners intended Part-Dieu to act as a second city centre for Lyon, the large train station was built in conjunction with a shopping centre (the largest in France outside of Île-de-France), a major government office complex, and the tallest skyscraper in the region, nicknamed Le Crayon (The Pencil) due to its shape. Prior to the construction of the Gare de la Part-Dieu, the neighbourhood was served by Brotteaux railway station. It closed in 1982 and its operations were absorbed into this station. While Part-Dieu is routinely the busiest, four other stations operate in metro Lyon: Perrache (in the city-center), Lyon-Vaise, Saint-Paul, and Gorge de Loup. Part-Dieu is a significant railway hub, connected to the French (SNCF) and international rail networks. From the many lines that run through Lyon, Part-Dieu is directly connected to Paris, Marseille, Valence, Saint-Étienne, Nice, Perpignan, Rouen, Roissy, Lille, Brussels, Geneva, Metz, Strasbourg, Tarbes, Bayonne, Nantes, Grenoble and Bordeaux. Gare de Lyon-Perrache station is a large railway station in the quarter Perrache, in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon, France. It was built in 1855 by Alexis Cendrier for the CF du PLM. The building was built in classical style and is composed of a double rooftop and a large passenger building. The station lost its view of the city when the transport interchange and dual-carriageway were built in the 1970s. Although much modern building has somewhat tarnished the look of the area, the station retains much of its original features: The station front features the names of towns served by trains departing Lyon-Perrache. The platforms are covered by two twin iron rooftops. It is the terminus of the TGV Sud-Est line, the high-speed railway line from Paris. It is also served by conventional trains from other parts of France, and is the terminus of Line A of the Lyon Metro. It is also the terminus of the two Lyon trams. Today, however, Perrache is no longer the primary rail station serving Lyon. Instead, the Gare de Lyon-Part-Dieu, constructed in the 1970s in a large planned business district outside of the central city, acts as the more popular embarkation point for most high-speed trains, especially to Paris and the north.

At the North-East gate of central Lyon, the Cité Internationale development project (224,000 sq. m) includes installations for services, shops and cultural activities as well as a residential and hotel sector. A central pedestrian concourse, the backbone of the site, links the various elements of the project. The Cité Internationale stands on the former site of the International Fair Hall of Lyon which moved to Chassieu in 1984, and became known as Eurexpo. The City of Lyon launched a design competition for the vacant site and awarded the contract to the Italian architect, Renzo Piano. The landscape designer chosen for the project was Michel Corajoud, known for his conception of landscaping as a means of enhancing architectural designs. The Cité Internationale was designed in harmony with its natural environment. Located between the Rhone and Tête d'Or Park , its buildings are set out in a curve that follows the river bank and the roofs recall the greenhouses in the park. This new district is easily accessible. The T.G.V. station at Part-Dieu is only 5 minutes away, the Bron business airport can be reached in 10 minutes and Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport in 20 minutes. It is close to the north beltway leading to the French and European freeway network. And its position in the heart of the city links the Cité Internationale to the other districts of Lyon. Parc de la Tête d'Or The Cité Internationale offers an exceptional quality of life and working conditions. The architectural and landscape design are aimed at creating an intelligent and functional unit in perfect harmony with the beauty of the natural surroundings. Nature is omnipresent thanks to a 10 hectare (25 acre) extension of Tête d'Or Park , lush greenery and the revamping of the Rhone embankment. The works included the laying of a 30 km pedestrian and cycle promenade lined with trees and which follows the river all the way to the Gerland neighborhood in the south, by way of the city center, and to Miribel-Jonage in the north. Interpol The Cité Internationale complex includes office buildings which fit in perfectly with the overall architecture of the site. The international criminal police organization (INTERPOL) established its world headquarters here in 1990 and thus laid the first international stone on the site shared with the Cité. The summit meeting of the world's top 7 industrial nations was held at the Cité Internationale in June 1996. Cité Internationale has become a lively area with a variety of attractions and activities: a convention center, an international hotel, a casino, a leisure and culture center with the Ciné Cité UGC cinema complex and the Museum of Contemporary Art and a residential sector. Cité Internationale continues to develop: the Convention Center expanded thanks to the construction of a 3000-seat hall and exhibition space of 7900 sq. m. There are also plans for a new hotel.
