Commuting is a fact of life for tens of million of Americans. In suburban Dallas, there is the Interurban Electric Railway that commemorates some of the significant developments in urban transportation. Between 1908 and 1948 the Texas Electric Railway ran from Dallas to Denison, among many other routes throughout Texas. The primary stop between these locations was in Plano, which is now the site for the Interurban Railway Museum. Plano decided to renovate the station into a museum to recognize the importance of the station as a sign of technological progression. The electric railway car was an important advancement of the traditional steam engine. The museum features pictures, displays and artifacts from the Texas Electric Railway. The UTD main campus is located in Richardson, Texas, United States in the heart of Telecom Corridor. The institution began as a research arm of Texas Instruments established in 1961 as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest and was renamed the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies (SCAS) in 1967. In 1969 the founders bequeathed SCAS to the State of Texas and Governor Preston Smith signed the bill creating The University of Texas at Dallas on June 13 of that year. The rapidly growing university is now known for its computer science, natural science, engineering, cognitive science, mathematics, and MBA programs, also the translation studies and Holocaust studies. UTD offers over 135 academic programs across its seven schools. With an array of interdisciplinary degree programs and over 50 research centers and institutes UT Dallas' curriculum is designed to allow study that crosses traditional disciplinary lines. The University's faculty includes four members of the National Academies and a Nobel laureate. For 2009 entering freshmen average SAT and 75th percentile scores are among the highest of the public universities in Texas and ranked third in public universities in Texas for the number of freshmen National Merit Scholars. As of the 2010 spring commencement the University has over 63,000 alumni who have earned more than 72,000 degrees since 1973. Having a larger campus than the UT System's flagship school, The University of Texas at Austin, there is enough room for growth. UT Dallas is on generally contiguous land including approximately 500 acres (2.0 km2) for campus development and another 468 acres (1.89 km2) devoted to Synergy Park. Almost 600,000 square feet (56,000 m2) of new facilities have been added from 2007 with another 280,000 square feet (26,000 m2) planned to be completed by 2012. While UTD is relatively young, the school boasts a Division III athletics program in the American Southwest Conference. It also has a nationally ranked chess team that has won several Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship titles and the debate squad finished its 2009-10 season as the only organization in the country to advance a team to the quarterfinals in both the 64th Annual National Debate Tournament (NDT) and the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA).

It was designed for the centennial of the Republic of Texas by architect Donald Barthelme in the beaux arts style and is considered one of the most representative examples of art deco architecture in Texas. The Hall of State is the culmination of the 1,500 feet (460 m) long Esplanade of State which is flanked by six exhibition pavilions and features a long reflecting pool. A tribute to Texans who served and sacrificed The Vietnam War evokes feelings of patriotism and pain. Bush dedicated the memorial in 1989. Five tablets of Texas granite bear the names of Texans killed or missing in action, including nine Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. A soothing waterfall flows alongside the memorial, which is familiarly known simply as, “The Wall”. Wreaths, bracelets, flowers, flags and other sentimental items are sometimes left next to the tablet bearing the name of a loved one. During the State Fair, visitors place small American flags next to the names of veterans they know – or just to honor those who served and sacrificed in the name of freedom. Designed in Spanish Baroque style with Moorish architectural influences, the Music Hall is the home of Dallas Summer Musicals, The Dallas Opera and more... HISTORY Nestled among the greatest concentration of genuine exposition art deco architecture in the world, the Music Hall at Fair Park made it's grand theatrical debut on October 10, 1925, with the musical premiere of Sigmund Romberg's, The Student Prince. However the real star of the show was the grand Hall itself which was dedicated "to the good, the true and the beautiful". Designed in Spanish Baroque style with Moorish architectural influences, the Music Hall's design theme is embodied in six soaring stair towers capped with cast drum and dome and five great arcade porches overlooking panoramic views of Fair Park. In 1954 the Music Hall underwent its first major renovation by installing much-needed air conditioning. In 1972 the Hall was remodeled again by expanding the lobby areas to create a grand foyer for the ticket office and space for the Crystal Terrace Restaurant. This project also enlarged the backstage area, providing a spacious annex and ample dressing rooms. The final touches included acoustical improvements and the installation of more comfortable seats creating a seating capacity of 3,420. In 1999 a refurbishment of all 3420 seats was completed, the theatre was re-carpeted, the interior repainted and a permanent gift store, infrared headset station and guest relations center were created. Other improvements and amenities, including booster seats, were added. The accommodating and spacious nature of the Music Hall make it a nationally recognized venue for Broadway musical touring companies, grand opera, ballet and other dance productions, concerts including live global television broadcasts, national pageants and a myriad of other large and small-scale public and private functions. The Music Hall is home to the Dallas Summer Musicals and seasonal performance of The Dallas Opera and Fort Worth Dallas Ballet. More than just a cultural center, the Music Hall provides a refined venue for corporate meetings, black tie affairs, luncheons and banquets. Combining the elegance of fine dining with the beautiful views of Fair Park, the Crystal Terrace dining room offers a gourmet buffet prior to summer musical, opera and ballet seasonal performances and is the ideal location for dinners, receptions, meetings and private parties. The Crystal Terrace can accommodate up to five hundred guests for a seated dinner and larger numbers for receptions and special events. With full catering capabilities, valet service available and a professional service staff, the Crystal Terrace can give personalized attention to the needs of tenants, making each event a memorable one. With multiple loading docks at stage level, an orchestra pit which can house a full orchestra, ample backstage dressing rooms and property storage area, the Music Hall is unique in its ability to accommodate full-scale opera and musical touring productions. Broadway favorites including "Les Miserables", "Miss Saigon" and the Southwest Premier of "The Phantom of the Opera" and grand opera productions such as "Aida", "Madama Butterfly" and "The Barber of Seville" are just some of the presentations having appeared on the spacious Music Hall stage. Under the careful management of DSM Management Group, Inc., an affiliate of Dallas Summer Musicals, the professional expertise of the Music Hall management staff and backstage personnel combine to offer friendly and efficient management of any show or event from load-in to load-out.
