De Vos Children's Hospital is a comprehensive medical center that serves the citizens and surrounding areas of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The history of Helen DeVos Children's Hospital dates back to 1973 when a small neonatal intensive care unit opened at Butterworth Hospital. Led by visionaries John Wilson, MD, a pediatrician, and Leonard Radecki, MD, a neonatologist, the unit soon grew into a regional center of specialized care for premature and critically ill newborns.
By the 1980s, additional needs became clear: More specialized care was needed to help more children—closer to home.
The first pediatric intensive care unit opened in 1988 under the direction of Dominic Sanfilippo, MD.
