Service both at the reception desk and for the breakfast service was friendly and courteous. The room (Standard King) was clean, of adequate size and seemed to have been recently updated. The bed in particular seemed new and the mattress was of good quality. The bathroom is quite small but the shower worked very well. All in all, a cost-effective and well run facility. « less

The desk attendant was very friendly an accomodating. We had a second floor room and I can see where some would find the lack of an elevator a problem. The pictures make the pool/and reception lounge look quite a bit larger than they really are. Otherwise, the Hotel was very clean and comfortable. I was especially impressed to see the very first application of intelligence re: the window air conditioner. There was a device to keep the air directed into the room instead of behind the window curtain, BRAVO! The shuttle to the Viejas casino was quick and the drivers friendly. I would recommend this Hotel for an overnight stay in the Alpine/El Cajon area. « less

My expectations were exceeded when I recently stayed two nights here. It looked like a typical 2-story motel, but turned out much better. I got a weekend special with rates of $95 a night. The room was spanking clean. I learned that all of the rooms had been gutted 10 months ago and everything was replaced with new carpeting, bathroom fixtures, granite sink counters, furniture, etc. It felt like I was the first one to use the room. Flat-screen tv, wi-fi, comfortable bed, desk, chairs and sofa. Nicely styled furniture. I requested a room on the ground floor with easy access. All of the rooms in the front were filled, so I had to go around to the back. It turned out to be a bonus. There was a lovely yard with grass, patio furniture, many beautiful flowers and a small pond with a little waterfall. A nice place to relax. The room was very quiet. I enjoyed the jacuzzi by the swimming pool. The lobby was decorated with a "lodge" feel to it, and had a computer there for guests to use, although it was slow. Freshly baked chocolate chips cookies are served at 7 p.m. The staff was ultra friendly. Within easy walking distance of a strip mall with some small eating places: Chinese, Greek, Mexican and Carl's Jr., a liquor store and some other shops. Across the streets are CVS and RiteAid drug stores. Close to the freeway. I definitely will stay there again. « less

We stayed here for one night, with two young children. We were given a room on the second floor but there are no elevators so it was a struggle first to get parking near the room and second to carry all the luggage up. The hotel has two buildings, each has an ice machine located on the ground floor, so more trips up and down the stairs because most rooms, including ours, have no refrigerator (or microwave). The rooms are very dark and the sink area is minimal. As for breakfast, go early because some of the items ran out well before the end of serving time - not that the selection was plentiful. I've stayed in other hotels of similar stature such as Holiday Inns and Comfort Inns and this Ayres does not compare well but they charge more. In the plus column, the hotel is conveniently located near I-8 and a shopping center, and the front desk person was polite and attempted to be helpful, although the failings of this hotel are certainly not his fault. This hotel needs a good deal more investment in making the hotel more comfortable and convenient, especially for families. We will not stay here again. « less
