Is it the view of Massanutten Mountain towering over the inn's backyard? Or is it the sight of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River skirting its foothills in a series of sparkling horseshoe bends? Maybe it's the town's slow pace.
German settlers first knew it as Stony Lick, then Staufferstadt and finally Strasburg, when it was established in 1761. On this frontier, the sturdy pioneers and their descendants survived Indian raids, the Revolution, and the Civil War. But what of the decades that followed?
Dr. Mackall R. Bruin who made house calls on horseback, riding the rough roads of the northern Shenandoah Valley originally built the Hotel Strasburg as a private hospital in 1902. When patients were able, they would visit him at his hospital on the corner of Queen and Holliday Streets. On the second floor, in the back hall, the Doctor's original shingle rests on a marble and metal washstand -- an artifact from his hospital. Among his papers in the hotel archives is a copy of a nurse's diploma dated 1907, and a number of bills for various "professional services rendered." One bill dated 1901, charged a patient $4.00 for treatment of an unknown ailment. It's no wonder the innkeeper wasn't surprised when one guest confided, "I was born here."
Rising to the hallmark of Hospitality The conversion from hospital to hostelry took place in 1915. From then, the three-story Victorian catered not only to travelers, but to residential guests like the teacher from Pennsylvania who taught in the elementary school. "When I lived here in the 1940s, I paid $35 a month," she said, "and that included two meals a day."
Its lobby guest register reflects a truly cosmopolitan parade of visitors from across the nation and from around the world. Television celebrities and Washingtonians of various political persuasions have stopped by the hotel while exploring the countryside, with its apple orchards, vineyards, and tidy towns clustered alongside US Route 11. this is an historic building-- over 100 years old. i believe it was a hospital during the civil war. the owners have added several adjacent houses to increase the room count. we had been to the restaurant in the hotel several times over the past few years. the restaurant is fine and is a great local attraction. in March/April we stayed at the hotel for 3 nights for the first time. we booked a queen bedded room with a shower/bath in one of the adjacent houses, but when we arrived we were told that the previous occupant had decided to stay. the receptionist never apologized or showed any concern. we were never offered any remedie for our situation. we were given a choice of any other vacant room in the main building. the main building had the restaurant on the first floor and rooms above it on the second and third floors. the staircase was forbidding. it lead to the second floor where there were approx. 4 empty rooms. they were all very small and oddly configured. we wanted one bed-- double, queen or king. but that excluded any room with a shower/bath. we finally opted for a double bedded L-shaped room with a jacuzzi tub, but no shower attachment. that left no way to wash my hair. both sides of the L were very small. it appeared to be newly paperred with attractive wallpaper. the room was directly above the restaurant and had several windows overlooking the intersection which was under construction and caused noisy traffic early in the morning. we left the hotel with very mixed feelings about it and will probably not return. « less

This was way more than just a place to stay! It was an experience in itself and worthy of being its own destination! We stayed on the third floor. (no elevators!) and didn't hear a peep from any other rooms or the hallway. The restaurant was great. We ate the hot breakfast both mornings and dinner one night. Great staff all the way around. Definitely would return! « less

We stayed in this charming hotel in Strasburg while making our first visit to Shenandoah National Park, which is very easy to get to from Strasburg. At $68 per night, our room was small but clean and well maintained. Except for the fact that the free wifi wasn't working during our brief stay, the Hotel Strasburg was all that reviews promised: the staff were friendly and helpful, and the restaurant offered a great convenience, providing complimentary continental breakfast for those in a hurry and homestyled cooking if you feel like a more relaxed meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). There are balconies in the hotel where you might even have breakfast outdoors when the weather is nice. Highly recommended. « less

This hotel was wonderful. The place was very clean, rooms were well-appointed and warm, with the gables, slanted ceilings (top floor) and grand staircases of the genuine historic hotel it is. Having an excellent restaurant in the hotel was another advantage.... we rolled right in and had dinner before settling into our room. A complimentary, freshly prepared continental breakfast in a beautiful 19th century dining room topped off our stay. We were so glad to have "ventured" off the interstate and away from the chain hotels that can feel so impersonal. The price was also very reasonable. « less
