Concannon Winery is a name well known to residents of Livermore, and
to those from elsewhere who sample wine: it is one of the oldest
wineries of the Livermore valley, having been founded in 1883 by
James Concannon. (The name Concannon also appears on one of the
Livermore streets, appropriately through vineyards.) The business
remained in the Concannon family for three generations, until Jim
Concannon (grandson of the founder) sold it in the late 1960s; it is
now owned by the Wine Group, said to be the second largest wine
conglomerate in the world. During the first years of corporate
ownership it retained very much of the small boutique approach to
winemaking, offering some very unusual wines — I can recall a
Russian-style white wine, and a very nice dessert wine (Muskat de
Frontegnan). Jim Concannon (a fellow Rotarian) remains very much an
active contributor to the business, and can often be found on the
premises; he takes great pride in all of the many developments there
and in the several recent alterations of the buildings.

The approach to the winery, on South Livermore Rd becoming Tesla Rd,
gives a rather grand landscape: a knee-high stone wall and a
waist-high thick hedge separates the road from the vineyards, and a
formal entrance (not now used) through an archway bears the name
Concannon; adjacent to the brick supports of the arch one sees a
sculptured bush in the shape of some large prehistoric animal. The
old Concannon residence is visible through the arch, as is the
recently constructed modern two-storey building that houses several
parts of the winery as well as corporate offices. The tasting room
remains, as it has been for decades, in the back of a brick building
that once held the large barrels in which aging took place; visits in
those days usually included a short tour of the barrel room. Beyond
this one can see some dozen large insulated tanks, evidence that the
winery is a major producer of wines.

The Concannon winery is quite large, by Livermore standards: their
total output is some 100 thousand cases a year. The surroundings of
the winery — the successors of the original Concannon family
vineyards — hold some 200 acres of Concannon vines, on which are
grown some dozen varieties of grapes. Most of this acreage is planted
in Petit Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
I was told that it takes some 2.2 pounds of grapes to produce one
bottle of wine, so much of their wine comes from outside the
Livermore valley. However, several wines — those from their local
vineyards — are available only through the tasting room: some 8,000
cases are available in this way. The locally available wines comprise
9 reds and 5 whites; on the day of my visit the tastings, for a $5
fee (this includes a monogrammed glass), were of 2 whites and 6 reds,
with prices ranging from $14 to $36.
The newest addition to the Concannon winery, a recently moved
Victorian-era house that once occupied a lot in downtown Livermore.
It will become a guest house for visitors associated with the Wine
Group owners.
The most notable new addition to the winery grounds is a rather grand
white Victorian-era white house, currently undergoing the final
stages of a move from a nearby location. This house once stood on a
lot in downtown Livermore, across from what is now Carnegie Park,
until the late 1960s. The owner at that time wished to use the lot
for other purposes (it has actually remained vacant since then) and
it was sold to a couple who moved it out of town (reportedly for
$2500). Over the years the maintenance of this building apparently
was more than the owners could manage, although it was a local icon
– it appeared one year on the cover of the LLNL telephone directory.
A few years ago it was purchased by Tom Madden and his wife, who
planned to turn it into a bed and breakfast. They provided some much
needed external repairs, and a coat of white paint. But apparently
they too ran into unexpected difficulties that prevented them from
this objective. The building was purchased by the Wine Group, and in
April 2008 made a short journey to its present location. The new
owners are said to intend using it as a guest house for visiting
representatives of the corporation.

The tasting room remains very much as it has been for the four
decades or so that I have known it: a windowless but high-roofed
brick-walled enclosure, with photos of the Concannon family and a few
of the many ribbons an medals that denote prize winning wines in
competitions. On the day of my visit the first white on the list, a
2006 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, is a variety that was one of the first
grapes to be grown in the original Concannon vineyards. Nowadays the
grapes for this wine come almost entirely from Monterey county. Their
other white, a blend of Rhone-style grapes, Viognier, Roussanne and
Chenin Blanc, they call “Stampmaker white” because nowadays
winemakers outside the Rhone valley are discouraged from using any
variation of the name “Rhone” in their labels (in Europe such grapes
form the essence of Cote du Rhone wines). The name Stampmaker is an
acknowledgement of the original source of income for founder James
Concannon: when he first arrived in the Bay Area he was a
manufacturers representative for a company that made rubber stamps.
His territory ran all along the West Coast. Evidently these were in
great demand, and small supply, so he prospered with this enterprise
– sufficiently so that he could in time enter the winemaking
business.
The first red wine on the list, a 2004 Tempranillo, comes also from
the Central Coast.
Tempranillo is said to be the second most widely grown grape in the
world, with vast acreage in Spain. Their version includes portions of
Grenache, Petite Sirah and Sangiovese. This is their first offering
of this varietal; only some 500 cases were made.
They offer a “Stampmaker Red”, basically a Syrah with lesser amounts
of Grenache, Cinsault, Petite Sirah and Viogner.
They are particularly proud (justifiably) of their 2004 Reserve
Syrah, which won gold medals at the San Francisco International wine
competition. It was explained to me that the barrels used for the
aging are of American oak, but that the construction of the barrels
(the cooperage) uses heat treatment like that used in France, thereby
imparting to the oak some flavoring characteristics usually
associated with French oak. The grapes for this wine come from the
vineyard surrounding the old Concannon home.
Since 1911 the Concannons have been making a Petite Sirah to blend with other varietals and since the sixties as a varietal to be enjoyed by itself. The
2004 version available for tasting comes entirely from their local
vineyards. Only some 480 cases were produced. It is an excellent wine
for immediate drinking or cellaring for later enjoyment. Today many wineries make Petite Sirah by itself, but the Concannons were first. For more information on Petite Sirah go to http://www.psiloveyou.org/
I tasted two Merlot wines, one from their local vineyard and the
other from Napa valley. Differences were discernable, but I would not
prefer one over the other They have a 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon from
the vineyard behind the tasting room; this too was produced in
limited amounts.
Their well known and very popular Chardonnay (not on the tasting menu
during my visit) comes from one of the vineyards behind the winery;
it too has limited bottling. It has long been one of our favorite
companions to a pre-dinner cheese and cracker snack.
Concannon remains an enjoyable place to visit, with wines that
maintain the quality for which they have been known for generations.
They provide a very nice picnic area adjacent to the tasting room,
shaded by an arbor and with a view of the vineyards; in time the
newly moved White House will make a nice backdrop to the scene.
