We stayed for one night purely as a stop over on our way to Whitby. It was very handy being located just off the A64. All the staff we met were very friendly, pleasant and helpful. Check-in was quick and easy. The room was very clean, comfortable and of a good size. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very quiet at night so we both slept very well. The bathroom was also a good size (and spotless!) and the shower in particular was a great size too! No bath though (not that we wanted one). We didn't have any problems with the temperature of our shower. Breakfast was fairly basic but okay, considering the price we'd paid, and there was plenty of it to fill up on! Sausages, scrambled eggs and beans were the hot foods then there were cereals, mini (sweet) muffins, toast, fruit, yoghurts. We didn't leave hungry. The 'restaurant' area was busy at breakfast but we didn't feel crammed in or rushed in any way. It wasn't an unpleasant experience. All in all our stay was a short but pleasant one. We would definitely stay here again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends and family! « less

I don't stay in cheaper hotels often. We only use budget hotels if we are passing through somewhere or en-route to somewhere else. This was my first time in a Holiday Inn Express. Its first plus point is its right next to a Toby carvery! Now that's a good start. Toby's tend to be good "Grub" very low pricing and cheaper drinks. However back to the job in hand. Holiday in express lobby was a little spartan, rooms a decent size but shower only, no bath. There was nothing wrong with the stay, basically you get what you pay for. Breakfast was included and a bit of a bun fight. Limited hot items but you could have as much or as little as you wanted. Lots of families staying here all seemed to have a few kids in tow. Many infants, so as you may have guessed it wasn't a very peaceful start to the day. Bit like an airport departure lounge! The only comparison I can give is with a premier Inn. Food at a premier is much better, it also feels more like a proper hotel and less like a Motel. Premiers tend to have proper restaurants, this Holiday Inn dining area was like a cafeteria . However as I said earlier its smack next to a Toby Carvery. That's a real plus in my book! Its quite a drive from the city centre, but is on the ring road and easy to find. I will look for a Premier Inn next time though if I were to do the same thing again. « less

For the purpose of my review bias, for the last 11 years I have stayed approximately 100 nights a year in the Intercontinental / Holiday Inn Group chain. I have stayed at this hotel a number of times over the past 5 years. My ongoing experience of the hotel is as follows: 1) Arrival can be difficult using the supplied Sat Nav and post code address instructions as the Sat Nav (TOM TOM) thinks the hotel is about a mile away. 2) On arrival at the hotel the check in person (DAVID) was extremely pleasant and friendly. 3) On arrival as a Holiday Inn Platinum Priority Club member, I did not receive any upgrades or free services e.g. free web access or drink at the bar, but did I receive a 10% reduction for a drink at the bar. 4) The reception area is the typical open plan area leading to the small bar, breakfast/-dining areas, which was always well kept, tidy and clean, and of a modern styling. 5) All area’s including the bedrooms where always well kept, tidy and clean. 6) The rooms are exactly what you would expect from a Holiday Inn Express chain brand see the attached photos and were of good quality. ( some of the views at the rear of the hotel over looking the neighbours field area are a little odd however). 7) There was NO free WiFi in the rooms. 8) Breakfast is the now the standardised combination of scrambled powered egg, baked beans, catering quality sausages, pre-sliced thin bread and a selection of baked pastries, and fruit. 9) I recommend this hotel as a cheaper alternative to the the centrally York based hotels 10) Check out, was a little odd, as on check in, I was told that I had pre-paid and that all was well, however on check out I was told that I had not and had to repay, which is always slightly worrying as you then on leaving have to call the credit card company to verify what has just been explained to you just to check that you have not doubled paid. 11. In summary the hotel scores 3.5/5 for an average Holiday Inn Express « less

Dear theresaheadinit, Thank you for taking the time to write a review relating to your recent stay with us.
Thank you for providing such an in depth review; it is always a pleasure receiving feedback from our loyal guests like you. All feedback received is used constructively to help improve hotel services and ultimately guest satisfaction.
I was delighted to read that David was pleasant and friendly. Your comments are greatly appreciated and will be forward onto him. The reception team work really hard to ensure every guest receives a warm friendly welcome as we know this is one of the most important factors of a guests stay.
As a Platinum elite member you will be aware that as of 1st July 2013 under the new IHG rewards club you will be entitled to an allocated amount of free WIFI at every IHG property. With regards our Breakfast items, all items are in keeping with IHG brand standards and sourced from approved suppliers. I must point out that the scrambled egg we serve is not powdered but in fact made fresh from our egg mix. The shelve life and cost of powdered egg is good but the quality is poor. We regularly replace our hot items during service to ensure consistency throughout.
I apologise about the confusion you experienced on check out, just for future reference when a guest books the Best Flexible rate the payment is taken on check out, a pre-authorisation is taken on the arrival date and this is not a payment. Advance Saver rates are different.
Thank you again for posting your review and writing such kind comments. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.
Kind regards, Stuart Anderson Deputy General Manager

A friend and I had a nice time away until we went to have a shower. At the coldest setting, it was scalding. We were told on leving that this is a known problem and if we can called down they may have been able to fix it. I had my shower just before breakfast and leaving. Beware of the showers. Also, the windows are difficult it next to impossible to open.... It took two of us for a modern window. « less

Dear Cat B,
Thank you for taking the time to review the Holiday Inn Express York Hotel. All guest feedback is used constructively to continually improve our hotel services.
I was delighted to read that you thought our rooms were clean. The housekeeping team work incredibly hard to provide a high level of service day in day out. They will be really pleased to read of your feedback.
I apologise that you felt your shower experience was below your expectations. This is not a “known problem” however we would have been able to investigate and hopefully rectify the issue had we known of your situation. Our friendly reception team are on hand 24 hours a day should you have any issues. Guests find our showers to be of a good standard and I sincerely hope next time you stay with us your shower experiences are more positive.
In relation to our Windows; we find guests don’t tend to have any issues opening or closing our windows in general but if any guests are struggling our reception team are on hand for assistance.
Again, thank you for your review, we really value all the feedback we receive and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Me and my son son booked an overnight stay here, and I cant say that I could fault our choice. On arrival we were greeted with a very friendly receptionist who was very professional and informed us of everything we needed to know and more, Thanks for that. Plenty of parking space and and access to York and surrounding area was just what we required. The room was very clean and comfortable and breakfast was spot on.Having a carvery right next door is just an added bonus! « less
