I've been sitting here, reading my old reviews, trying to figure out how such a charming place changed so drastically. I've stayed at Mill River Manor when I come home since I moved off LI & it's always been like the little engine that could. Sure, it's an older property on a main thoroughfare but the location was great, the rooms were clean & the staff was always cheerful & friendly. It was a can do place! I stayed there with one of my cousins over Easter weekend & I was embarrassed that I had recommended we stay there. They still haven't fixed the elevators & the room was really feeling it's age. It definitely did not feel clean - not filthy but not really clean. Maybe they're still working on the improvements they had been talking about. I'll have to think long & hard before I decide to stay there again. Sad really to see it go downhill like this; it was my go-to place. « less

Dear Karen:
I am sorry to hear that your recent stay with us was not up to your standards. You have stayed with us before so you can see that the hotel has gone through renovations on its exterior and its lobby area since October. We have also completed total renovations to 40% of our rooms with the remaining to be completed by this summer. All of our renovated rooms include brand new design with new carpeting, furniture, wallpaper, televisions and fixtures. The hotel also has a new Italian bistro located on the lobby level called Cala di Mare opening its doors this month. I hope with these improvements and with our seasonal outdoor pool opening in May you allow us the opportunity again to serve you Thank you
Alan

The hotel was a 3 minute drive from the skating rink. Just what I was looking for. The room was clean, hot water worked, bed was good, and the room warm on a very cold february night. That was all I required. The hotel was also within walking distance to a Thai restaurant where the food was good. This hotel was more of a motel than a hotel.
I had no illusion about what this hotel was like. So I had no surprises. The free continental breakfast was nice, saved me a trip to a resturant before I hit the road for home. « less

This hotel is perfect for trekking into NYC; this last trip was to see Fun. at Radio City Music Hall. The hotel includes parking and the LIRR is within a few hundred yards of the hotel, which is why it is so perfect for accessing the city. 40 minutes later and you are at Penn Station. It takes the hassle out of Manhattan. The staff are very nice, the accommodations are decent; the rooms are small, but it is a clean and functional hotel. There are also a number of restaurants within walking distance if you do find yourself back in Rockville Center early. This is our second stay and it will be our go-to hotel in the future. « less

Our "non-smoking" room reeked of stale and fresh smoke - we actually woke up the next morning feeling as if we smoked a pack of cigarettes the night before (even though we are non-smokers). There were dogs barking loudly next door all night. I appreciate pet-friendly hotels, being a dog owner myself, but management should step in when their policies are disruptive to other guests. Lastly, a man down the hall from us opened his door w/a gun in his hand when we were returning to our room that night... NOT a pleasant experience, at all.
Management response from Alan Chan, General Manager
Dear Ms. Madeline:
My apologies for any inconvenience you may have encountered during your stay with us. Rest assure our rooms are 100% Non smoking and anyone caught smoking in our rooms are subject to a monetary penalty. We are int he process of renovating the entire hotel and would hope you give allow us another opportunity to accommodate you. We do have security personel on premise and take the security of our staff and guests serious. I am amazed that you saw someone with any type of illegal objects on their person. If you notified the front desk, our staff would have taken immediate action so that the hotel is a safe environment.
Thank you.

Not sure why my last review wasn't ever approved, so i will post again....Here goes.
I will only state facts of my experience about this hotel and not compare it to other hotels and reviews. I will say that I should have listened to the terrible reviews before booking my stay.
This was by far the worst experience I have ever had when traveling for any reason at a hotel. I booked my trip through hotels.com. At first glance when pulling into the parking lot (hotel located on busy highway, Sunrise HWY), I was horrified. Limited parking...you have to park in the back of the hotel and walk around the building to the front entrance. Also, this looks more like a motel than a hotel....even more like an "inn". Rooms are outside like motel style, not located nicely in the building.
I still gave it the benefit of the doubt and went to check in. The girls at the front desk were very helpful and friendly. No issues there. I went back outside, into the freezing cold, and took the run down elevator to the third tier. Upon walking into my room, my only thoughts were "OH HELL NO!!!!"
List of problems with room:
-Stains on carpets -Became very itchy after sitting on the bed for 5 minutes -Dirty comforter (black specs like flea dander all over the place) -Room cramped -Wallpaper peeling off walls -CRT TV (staticy) -Buttons on phone not working. Could not check messages or call front desk. had to dial 0 instead -1970's furniture -Mirror above sink falling apart -SLOW WIFI -Constant noise outside from train and busy highway -Drafty
The place had the feel of an "hourly" rate motel.
I immediately got on the phone with hotels.com and front desk explaining this was NOTHING like the website had boasted!!!!. Hotels.com called down to the desk as did I. The front desk told hotels.com rep that they contacted the manager, and he would NOT REFUND my money because I already checked in and that was their policy. NEVER did he try to reach out to me to discuss and rectify. At this point I am stuck and out $160. I spent the next 3 hours trying to book a hotel on Long Island with no success as all were sold out.
I had to suck it up and deal with it for the night. Thank god only booked for 1 night! I remember reading one lady's review about blood being on a pillow. I can only imagine that someone must have commited suicide because they were stuck at this hotel.
I had to "sleep" FULLY clothed, in my winter jacket on top of bed sheets and comforter to feel somewhat "safe" from bed mites/buggy feeling.
I was also up every hour because of the train that comes through. Didnt see on your website that a train station is basically attached to your hotel.
If you go to their website, it is a total bait and switch and 75% of what they advertise is false. Here is what they "boast" on their site:
Restaurants: •Tredwells, on premises, Steakhouse, 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. WHERE??? I asked them, no restaurant or bar
Hotel Amenities: •Cocktail Lounge NONE! •Massage services NONE! •Porterage/bell services WHERE? DIDNT SEE ONE •Express check in •Express check out WENT TO DO THIS THROUGH TV AND SAID THAT THE SERVICE WAS N/A •Ice/vending machines HALF WERE BROKEN •High-speed Internet access SLOW SPEED INTERNET ACCESS •Room Service ?????? FROM WHAT RESTAURANT?
They did have fitness center! Cant put a review on this because i was afraid to even check it out.
I have seen responses from the hotel manager on here claiming they are renovating ....WHERE ARE THESE ROOMS!? The only thing that looks somewhat renovated is the front desk area and where breakfast is. The outside is completely run down, and the clientel walking around outside makes you feel unsafe. I think the "renovation" response is BS and just an excuse.
This place is nothing short of a bed bug infested motel. For $160, you can find MANY MANY other places, such as the back seat of your car that is more comfortable. Do yourself a favor and stay far away! « less

Dear Bob:
On behalf of the entire staff of the hotel, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered during your stay. First off I would like to inform you that the hotel is undergoing a complete renovations to our rooms and will be completed by late February 2013. Also, parking is limited in any hotel you travel to. We are not able to do anything abot the physicality of the hotel like the exterior corridors.
I hope, once the renovations are complete, you allow us the chance to show you the true vision of what this hotel can provide.
Thank you
