The Hotel Modern New Orleans has an immediately welcoming feel; with no check-in desk, guests are greeted with complimentary drinks in the lobby lounge and escorted to their rooms just as if they were staying at a friend's guesthouse. The 135 comfortable rooms were designed in-house with a modern eclectic aesthetic that mirrors the city's juxtaposition of Old World charm with New World diversity. Each room features a spacious layout and selection of furniture to fit the needs of busy travelers, yet also has a distinct style with decorative antiques throughout.
The hotel goes beyond the basics to offer an array of cultural amenities such as thoughtfully curated books in every room as well as burlesque shows and a music series with international artists in the cocktail lounge, Bellocq. Named for photographer E.J. Bellocq, who secretly photographed the madams of pre-prohibition New Orleans, Bellocq will feature a menu of original cocktail creations from Cure founders Neal Bodenheimer, Kirk Estopinal and Matthew Kohnke that evoke the city’s past.
Acclaimed New Orleans chef Dominique Macquet (Dominique’s on Magazine) along with his chef de cuisine Quan Tran, will open Tamarind at The Hotel Modern New Orleans. The restaurant is named after the exotic tropical fruit Macquet enjoyed as a child growing up in Mauritius and will explore Vietnamese cuisine from the perspective of nearly a century of French colonial presence in Vietnam, lasting from 1858 until the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Open for lunch and dinner (as well as breakfast for hotel guests), Tamarind features a 70-seat dining room with an outdoor courtyard and a 40-seat private dining room.

First and foremost, we found this hotel to be in a good location. There is a "trolley" stop just about opposite the hotel, and Bourbon Street and Canal Street and close enough to walk to.
As the name suggests, the decor is cool and trendy and was clean overall.
We booked into a Small King Room via Expedia...the bedroom was small but the bathroom was very spacious , yet still had the horrid shower over bath thing with a shower curtain, when there was more than enough space for a stand alone shower. In all my travels in the US so far, I've come across 1 stand alone shower and not one glass Shower Door...only plastic shower curtains!! So very odd.
Anyway, we really needed a safe and we were told that it was in the closet, except oddly enough (even for the staff members) we didnt have a closet...so after already unpacking all our things, they moved us to a larger room with a safe, and kindly gave us a complimentary upgrade. This bedroom was more spacious, yet the bathroom with much smaller, however had a stand alone shower so we were happy.
The room has all the mod cons..such as flatscreen tv, white linen, coffee machine (yet with paper cups and straws for teaspoons!), nice bathroom amenities, heating/aircon, hairdryer etc.
My main complaint would be the front desk/check in procedure. There is a tiny desk as you walk in, and we stood around for ages until someone offered to help us. Unless someone told you, you would never believe its a check-in/reception desk. Eventually we were noticed, the bell man took our name, took our credit card and ID and disappeared for around 15minutes. When he came back to the front, he started helping other guests with their luggage...as if he'd forgotten that he was in the process of checking us in. I questioned this and eventually he came back with our room card, but that was it. He gave us absolutely no further information, such as what he's done with my credit card, basic info about the hotel/services they offer, breakfast/dinner info, check out time, where to park etc. This is standard in South African hotels.
A few days later, we have some discrepancy with someone on our account, and it took the manager (we assume he was one of the managers) ages to sort it out. He had to keep going to the back office to discuss it with one of his superiors, but also have many other guests appearing at the desk who required attention. It was just silly that there were other staff members at the back, but no one was coming forward to assist this guy.
I asked some staff members few bits of info about the hotel and the area, and kept on getting "I dont know" or conflicting information.
I definately feel that this hotel has alot of potential, but is either short-staffed or the staff need further training. They also need to improve their check in/reception desk to something on a more professional level. First impressions are everything! « less

This place just got refurbed and it is now acceptable. The rooms are small and not fancy, but it is charming in a southern sort of way. I would give this place a 2 star rating, but Tivoli and Lee(restaurant) and Bellocq(bar) are superb. I would stay here again for the sole purpose of not having to walk to the restaurant. I stayed here for a convention and walked it every day and it was a nice morning walk. Only about a mile. « less

We are glad that you got to experience and enjoy Tivoli & Lee. What was your favorite dish?
Next time you plan on visiting New Orleans, please contact us directly. We would like for you to experience another one of our room types. Not all of the rooms in the hotel are as small as the “Small” category, and I am sure that it will make a difference and change your perception of the hotel.

We know New Orleans moderately well and did not want to be in the Quarter but wanted to be able to walk to anything easily. The Hotel Modern was a good fit. It is a stylish recently renovated place with a hipster feel (not cloyingly). The room was very clean, nice but compact. Small rooms don't bug us in the least. There is an on site restaurant and bar which we consider a priority. Both bar and restaurant are great, totally with visiting. One major plus is the streetcar which runs in front of the hotel if you don't feel like walking. If you do you can be in the quarter in about 10 minutes. When we booked we were given a $199 room rate but when we checked out it magically went down to $139. I guess they were not booked so we got a great discount. I can find no fault with this hotel and would gladly stay again. « less

What we liked: Good food at restaurant, great location (walking distance to casino, boardwalk, aquarium, Canal street, shopping, dome, etc...), simply call front desk if missing something in your room, great and creative bartender, friendly staff, fast check out, comfy bed, restaurant actually gave a free alcoholic drink to my husband because service was taking long (con: but service was slow in general), hotel for adults
Not liked so much: rooms a little small, if you are staying above the bar expect it to be noisy, check-in was a little long, hotel not very big (no places to really sit and chat), boutique-style hotel « less

We stayed here during the Jazz festival in May. It had rained slightly during the day so it was next to impossible to get close enough to the sidewalk to bring in our luggage. Next we looked for the reception desk and were noticed by someone standing by a table with a carafe of water and another with rum punch. That was reception. It was impossible to tell during he 4 days we were there who the employees were. We were brought to a small room on the 10th floor. The door to the bathroom was party blocked by an arm chair. There is almost no light in the bathroom. The provided bathrobe was stained with something. I left it on the floor to be replaced and it was simply hung up. We were given 1bar of soap for the bathroom which wasn't replaced. Likewise for the shampoo. We had to request both towels and shampoo. I think they actually had to go out o get shampoo. We only got a bath mat one day. We had breakfast the first morning which was fine. We were a little put off by the "20% added to the bill as a gratuity for our convenience". I wouldn't have minded so much but he service was awful. Next, the TV in the room had very basic cable and only a few of the channels were clear enough to watch. The room has a Kuerig coffee maker which I used twice. Then the only coffees provided were decaf. There is very little privacy an in the hallways you can hear very private activities taking place. When we were shown our room we were told that we could call the desk to ask for anything, I.e. more towels, robes etc. most hotels provide these things without constantly asking. I know that we were there during a busy time but for what we paid, everything should and could have been better. Perhaps a focus on service and less on trading on a cool factor would help. I definitely wouldn't stay here again. To add insult to injury, when I checked the price for our last night after I had paid in full for four nights, the price was $50 less. « less
