"John F. Kennedy Airport is one of the largest and busiest airports"

John F. Kennedy Airport is one of the largest and busiest airports in the world and is located on Jamaica Bay in southeast Queens, New York. The airport, which covers over 1,000 acres, is so large that it has its own zip code. It serves 100 air carriers from 50 countries. Among them are the discount carrier Jet Blue, Aer Lingus, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, KLM, US Airways and Virgin Atlantic. JFK also services cargo carriers like FedEx and DHL. There are four runways around JFK's central terminus. The airport is the only one in New York City large enough to handle jumbo jets like the 747. More from this guide...

The Inside Scoop by our Local Expert

JFK is not only one of the largest, but is also one of the busiest airports. This is fitting since it is located in one of the most action-packed cities in the world–New York. Though it is not in the heart of the city, JFK is located in Queens so you can see more than one borough and experience the outskirts of the city, while being able to easily access Manhattan. That's why the hotels in that area are so appropriate and convenient. After you've seen the sights, eaten the cuisine, and walked the city streets, you'll need to get back home. But not before you do some exploring at JFK airport first. The airport has lots to do while you await your flight home. Eat at popular restaurants, like Chili's, Au Bon Pain, and Subway, at one of the eight JFK terminals. Shops like Cartier, Clinique, Swarovski, and Fossil are all places where you can shop to take away any travel stress you may be feeling before your flight.

JFK airport began as Idlewild airport, named after a former golf club in the area. Idlewild was actually a nickname, as the formal name of the airport was New York International Airport, Anderson Field. The first flight occurred on July 1, 1948.

Idlewild was renamed after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Aside from the many air carriers it serves, it is also very convenient for New York's famous mass transit system. The Q3 bus makes regular stops between the 169th street bus terminal in Jamaica and the airport. The free AirTrain JFK, a breezy monorail gives passengers a view of the futuristic looking airport and takes them not only between the eight terminals, but to the car rental companies. It also takes passengers to the subway and the Long Island Railroad Station on Sutphin Boulevard. The one drawback is that the passengers do have to pay to leave the AirTrain. The AirTrain runs in a loop around the airport and one arrives at a terminal every ten minutes.

JFK also has a state-of-the-art control tower, which was designed by the firm of Pei, Cobb, Freed & Partners. The airport also generates its own electricity and has fuel storage facility with a capacity of 32 million gallons of jet fuel.
