I have some difficulties to know how to rate this hotel in my short review. The hotel got some good points as well as some bad ones. So I guess it boils down to what is most important to each visitor. The hotel is located in a good and convenient area. Staff was nice, friendly and helpful. The breakfast was really so-so. All the basics you need for the day's start, but no more. Our room was quite large and located in the 5th floor next to the elevator. And believe me - there can't be much insulation in the walls, because we heard VERY well the elevator noise all night...as well as fellow travelers talking/activities in neighbor-rooms. (Meaning it will be hard to relax and sleep well). In the closet, pillows of various hard/softness available. Lighting in the room was a bit dim, missing some more light at the entrance/wardrobe area. Bathroom nicely decorated but small and could do with some more amenities for a hotel in this price-range/class. Further - be careful with the toilet - our got stuck more than one time even with use of minimal paper for the "daily duties". However, the room was well cleaned every day. We didn't try any eating options at the hotel, so I can't comment. We got free one hour Internet access. If you need a "real" longer time access, you will need to pay directly with your card to Swisscom something like 10 or 12 Euro for 24 hours - depending on your choice. Nothing wrong with the Swisscom service itself, but the hotel should really re-consider their Internet-access solution for the guests... hey, it's 2013 now :-) Our room got a small refrigerator/minibar, but no coffee-boiler, complimentary water bottles or similar. Fine for us, but just worth to mention. « less

Just back from 4 nights in the Hotel. Its a fantastic hotel in a lovely area to the left of the hotel there is lots of restaurants bars and shops, Harry's bar is a 5 min walk away and the Hard Rock Cafe isn't too far away either. The rooms are pretty basic, they have a tv but with very few English channels there's a mini bar in the room with reasonable prices, fresh towels and sheets daily and the room was immaculate. There wasn't any tea/coffee facilities but there was a safe. In my room the air conditioning didn't work but the windows opened so the room was cool enough. The Spanish steps are a ten minute walk away and the hop on hop off bus stops almost directly outside the hotel. Definately worth going to this hotel. « less

This hotel is ok just for getting your head down, there are no extras, rooms a very basic, NO kettle, to make a cuppa after being out all day. so take a travel kettle, not even one for hire. the breakfast are ok, fill up, as it can be expensive in rome. we got a tea and coffee on way back to hotel one evening, it cost €12. becareful were you eat, and watch out for them selling you specials in restaurents the only thing special is the price. the reception staff were very nice in the hotel. the rooms were clean and tidy, there was no atmosphere in the hotel. people just coming and going. the hotel is only less than 10minutes walk down hill to the top of the steps and the fountain is also about 10 minutes walk in other direction.. take comfy shoes LOTS OF WALKING. ROME IS A LOVELY PLACE LOTS TO SEE. BUT VERY PRICEY. « less

Good points: > Hotel in safe area > Close to Metro & public transport stops > Well located for Spanish Steps / shopping district / Pantheon / Trevi Fountain > Evening meal and service at roof top restaurant was good > Airport shuttle offered by hotel is cheaper than local taxis > Room has a safe > Windows have shutters which help block out most street noise
Less than good points: > Wasn't expecting a twin room > Only one English speaking TV channel available > Wifi is 9 Euros per 24 hours - today this seems astronomical > No tea / coffee making facilities in room > For the room offered we felt it was slightly overpriced (180 Euro per night inc. breakfast)
Personal recommendations: > Take some ear plugs if you're easily disturbed from your sleep - whilst the room is relatively well insulated it doesn't block out the excessive horns, sirens and bin collections! > The hotel shuttle bus is less tiring than the train / taxi combo, and the views are better (and it's not much more expensive - 50 Euros each way instead of 39 for train / taxi). > The only cheaper way to travel from airport to Termini was Terravision buses at 6 euro one way (didn't try this) > If you have a caffeine dependency consider taking your own travel kettle, there is a fridge in your room for milk which can be sourced locally > Buy drinks from newsagent at end of the street, much cheaper than mini bar ;-)
A short taxi haul from Termini railways station (10 minutes / 11 Euros inc. cases), or 45 minutes from Fiumicino Rome airport by airport shuttle supplied by hotel (50 Euros vs. closer to 60 by locally supplied taxis), the general location of the hotel was very good.
We booked direct with the hotels website and got a non refundable 'deal price' (-18%), but be aware when you opt for this route you get charged immediately, and not when you arrive / check out.
Located just off of the expensive Via Veneto, and according to the sightseeing bus we went on this is the district where the Italian Papparazi hang out as there are plenty of 5* hotels frequented by the rich and famous (although we didn't see a famous face during our 4 day stay!). It felt much cosier and far safer than say the immediate area around Termini station which was welcome.
Overall whilst we enjoyed our stay at the Savoy, there were a few niggling issues (mostly mentioned above), but the hotel staff were polite and helpful and did their best to help out wherever required.
Whilst the entrance area is fairly grand, the 'value' rooms we opted for did not reflect what I consider to be 4* given the lack of some basic amenities, and whilst the room was comfortable and clean it felt on the thick end of expensive (even though Rome is accepted as pricey). Bathroom was best bit of the room, offering everything you'd expect. We stayed in room 411 which faced out onto street (4th floor), and was clean and tidy.
You get complementary drinks vouchers and a discount voucher for the rooftop restaurant which is a nice touch. Menu prices range from about 40 euros per head to over 60 (plus drinks). We had a beef chateaubriand which was very well prepared / cooked and came exactly as we ordered it. Breakfast is more run of the mill, typical Euro fayre, but fine and good to stock up on ahead of a long day trekking.
Whilst I was fond of the Savoy and it's slightly olde worlde charms, the hotel is at risk of slipping behind the curve in terms of embracing some of the basic requirements of the modern day traveller. Whether this is addressed in more expensive rooms / suites(?), but I consider some form of drinks facility in the room and 'reasonably priced' wi-fi (you'd think it would be free at 180 Euro per night!) not to be a big ask! Other than that we were satisfied. « less

Dear Mr Cox,
thank you for sharing your experience at the Savoy here on Tripadvisor, your comments will be surely appreciated by many travellers, it's so useful.
I regret you were not given a double room, I wish we had known it just to simply changing room. Hope to have the chance to have you here in the future to set the right bedding type. For the wifi cost I must say what I already wrote to other clients: our experience in the past with free wifi was so negative that I preferred to host a world famous provider as Swisscom is although it is not free.
Thank you again for choosing us, kind regards
