On May 7th my husband and I arrived at the hotel with a reservation made through expedia. On the way to the hotel I phoned expedia as we had not received an email confirmation. They assured me that we had indeed booked and all would be well. When we arrived things were not okay, as they could not find our reservation. As the front desk clerk explained to us in a very condescending and rude matter that "no email confirmation means no reservation". We again contacted expedia and they gave us the confirmation number. Unfortunately, they could still not find our reservation. When I asked the clerk if there were rooms available he assured me that there were but we "certainly wouldn't be getting the expedia rate". At this point the other clerk (lovely lady) intervened and stated that she would continue to look for our reservation and instructed the other clerk to check us in which was greatly appreciated after having driven ten hours that day. I understand that there was a glitch with our reservation and that problems were created because of this. What I didn't realize that booking through expedia causes you to be treated in a less respectful manner. It was unfortunate that the booking clerk handled our situation so poorly as the Benson is truly a beautiful hotel in an excellent location. « less

Babsy and I went to Portland on the weekend to cheer ourselves up. We wanted to eat, sleep, walk, and talk in the city, taking in fresh sights, sounds, and food. We stayed at the Benson Hotel, and it is an architectural delight. The ceiling in the lobby looks like something from the Italian Renaissance. Couches are arranged around an enormous fireplace. People can be seen walking along the Mezzanine above, strolling, leaning on the railing, watching the action below. The bar adjacent to the lobby is done with dark, rich wood. Large windows look out onto Broadway, the main drag for the city. We checked into the hotel, obtained out room, then returned to the bar to sample the drinks. Babsy was served "a sweet martini," and she liked it. I ordered a Merlot recommended by the waiter, and it was good. Glass and woodwork surrounded our table, A beautiful chandelier hung from the ceiling. This luxury hotel is now 100 years old, and it is truly beautiful. Exotic marble from Italy, and rich-colored wood, Circassian walnut from Russia, were used in constructing this elegant lobby and bar. We lounged in the luxury and opulence of the area for a long time. We sat on the couches in front of the marble fireplace and watched people come and go. We loved the colorful leaded-glass windows that glowed with warm colors and light. The furniture was elegant, comfortable, and artistic. This room is surely luxurious and distinctive--a wonderful place to relax and enrich the soul. Finally, we settled into our room, which had a good view of Broadway and the mountains to the east. The room was comfortable and attractive, and because it was a suite, we had a couch and extra room to spread out. It was the beginning of a great weekend for us. We began by walking along Broadway, window-shopping and people-watching. We stopped at the Performing Arts Center and explored the art and architecture in the lobby. We bought tickets to a play, and began discussing our plans for dinner and entertainment. More later . . . « less

The vintage building and the welcoming doorman are your first indicators that you have made the correct hotel choice. Then when inside, the warmth of the fireplace, and the smiles of the friendly front desk greets you.
My stay was wonderful. The bed was comfortable, the room was small, but charming. The hotel is in walking distance from stores, restaurants, and everything else you should perchance need.
The concierge is fantastic. I needed a upscale, yet tasty restaurant for 12 people. He gave me suggestions, and then booked the reservation. When we arrived at the restaurant for our dinning experience, we were seated immediately and the service was first class.
This will be my only choice of hotel when I travel to Portland. « less

Centrally located, nicely refurbished, great lobby. This is one of those places where the whole hotel staff seemed eager to help you fall in love with their hotel and city. Even the girl refilling the coffee services in the rooms shared her favorite bookstore and stationary shop recommendations.
Two quick things to keep in mind:
The drop off area in front of the hotel can get busy. Making a block was all it took to score a spot.
The other is that there must be an Oregon law prohibiting children from sitting with their parents in a bar area. Not sure who came up with this one but our daughters thought it to be ridiculous - the nine year old doesn't want to ever move to Oregon as she thinks they may have even more silly laws. Luckily the Benson's bar allows families to sit together. My wife and father-in-law loved the "Black Widow" cocktail.
The hotel's morning coffee is so-so, the in-room is Starbucks. There's a Pete's a block away, a Stumptown Roasters three blocks away, and a very nice Starbucks about four short blocks away. « less
