The University of Essex is a British campus university with the original and largest campus located near the town of Colchester, England. Established in 1963 and receiving its Royal Charter in 1965, the University has established itself as a centre of excellence for humanities and social sciences, and is highly rated in the United Kingdom and the world for the fields of sociology, philosophy, politics, history, linguistics and economics. It also has strength in biological sciences, business studies, psychology and electronic engineering. The University's main campus is located within Wivenhoe Park in the English county of Essex, less than a mile (1.6 km) from the town of Wivenhoe & 2 miles (3.2 km) from the town of Colchester. Apart from the Wivenhoe Park campus, there are campuses in Southend, Loughton (home of the East 15 Acting School) and Ipswich - University Campus Suffolk, a joint venture with the University of East Anglia . The University's motto, Thought the harder, heart the keener, is adapted from the East Saxon poem The Battle of Maldon.
