Enjoy friendly casino atmosphere, good food and spacious rooms just one block off the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Las Vegas. First-class treatment and a friendly, caring staff combined with award winning dining and the best of gaming make this the perfect vacation destination.
As you enter the California, you'll be welcomed by the richly-appointed lobby which is just a prelude to yet another highlight-the tropical motif of its guestrooms. The rooms' décor has taken a page from the Hawaiian home of many of it's freequent visitor and is enchanting, comfortable and a respite from the hustle and bustle of the casino. It offers a true island atmosphere, right in Downtown Las Vegas.

I had originally booked a 6 night stay at the Cal. We stayed at the Main Street Station last year and thought the Cal would be the same. Well after two days we checked out, wheeled our luggage to the Golden Nugget for the duration of our visit. This place is basically a DUMP. Dirty and stinky from all the smoke.
I had originally requested a room in the west tower and they gave me a room in the east tower. The sign on the floor said non smoking floor. The stench of cigarette smoke grossed both of us out. I opened the door to the room to see a really tiny room with a broken leaning lamp by the bed. The smell was horrible. So down we go to the front desk and requested a room in the west tower. The bed is old, hard and lumpy and the room was not very clean and the carpet was full of stains.
With a bank of 3 elevators, only one worked, so needless to say, everyone had to squish on the only one working. We tried to gamble in the casino, but the smoke was so thick and stinky we had to go outside for some fresh air. My husbands eyes were burning and constantly running from the smoke filled casino.
There is no air exchangers in there to filter out all that smoke. The rooms and furniture are old and in desperate need of repair and upgrading.
On the first day we were there, my players card did not work, so I headed over to the players club to get a new one. The employee working did not even say hello, could I help you....she said nothing to me but was in a deep conversation with another person. What...am I invisible. All I wanted was a new players card, I did not want to hear the drama going on from these two people. She handed me my card and still did not acknowledge me.
I spoke to a manager and requested to refund me for at least one night and they said no. So needless to say, I am not happy with this.
Before you book this hotel, do your homework. This is not the place if you are a non smoker. If you stay there, you will inhale cartoons of second hand smoke. The east tower is horrible. If you stay there, you will be smoking at the Cal with the rest of them. Just the smell alone will drive you out.
Also, don't ask for a Singapore Sling at the San Francisco Pub, the bartender will give you something that tastes like cherry cough syrup........that was gross also.
On a positive..........The Pasta Pirate is an excellent restaurant with great food. « less

I have stayed at California Hotel many times. The hotel is old but for me, that is part of the charm staying downtown. The rooms are well maintained and have always been clean. The casino is divided between two floors. They still have coin video poker machines. I find downtown to be a break from the chaos of the strip. Don't miss the buffet at Main Street Station which is connected to the California Hotel. I would not bring children to this property. There is nothing here for children. « less

My husband I stayed here April 8 through April 11 during our visit to Las Vegas. If you are looking for clean room, comfortable place to stay and don’t mind little further from strip, this is good an option. Hotel building is older but all seems to clean. Our room was clean, large and spacious compare to the strip hotels we stayed last 4 visits. I also didn’t have any room services and plenty of towels, shampoo, conditioners, lotion were provided during our stay. I choose this hotel because there wasn’t any resort fee on top of what you pay for hotel like all other hotel does. Only thing I didn’t like staying in downtown is you have to drive or catch bus, taxi to go to strip. We had our car so it wasn’t problem for us other than driving time. Also, all downtown hotel parking need to be validate if don’t want to pay parking fee which is kind of hassle. California hotel seem to be carter to Hawaiian tourists as I noticed there is large numbers of guests from Hawaii and even some ad for Hawaiian business which confuse me bit. All and all, we will stay here again.
Tip: All you can breakfast buffet for $6.99 in the hotel restaurant was a great value. « less

My fiance, parents, and I stayed here from April 22-April 27, 2013. I received a special offer, and we decided to check it out. We are very glad that we did. It is not right on Fremont Street, so you do not hear any of the loudness at night. We felt safe, as there were security guards at every entrance, and in the parking garage. The general atmosphere was one of happiness, as guests and staff greeted us and actually smiled. I never experienced this on the strip. The food was very good and I loved the salad bar in the cafe. The vegetables were fresh, and I could stay on my diet.
It was not overly crowded, which we also liked. The rooms were clean, and when my fiance requested another pillow, he was given one immediately, and with no issue. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. When we were given a room with 2 queen beds, we requested a change to a room with 1 king bed. The front desk staff person immediately changed us to a room with one king bed...no problems!
This hotel exceeded our expectations, and we would definitely return.
If you want the glamour of the strip, then this is not the place for you. If you want a safe, clean, and extremely affordable place, then this is the place for you.
We loved what we came to call that week the "Hawaiian spirit." Keep up the great work. « less

My wife received a special offer from the hotel so we thought we would give it a try. The rooms were nice, clean and comfortable. The drinks were good, the gaming was ok, but the food was excellent! We had the prime rib special one night, which was excellent! The vegetable at the salad bar were fresh, and the service was very good. I would highly recommend the California. « less
