I have been going to the Colonial House Inn for many years. Now that I live in the Gold Country of California, I go there every time I am on the East Coast. I used to take my mother who loved the place.
Since my mother passed in 2004, I take one of my girlfriends. When my late college roommate was on "home dialysis," the staff went out of their way to accommodate her needs so she could still visit there.
The Inn is old and quaint, and occasionally quirky. However, it's not a "Corporate Hotel" with everything "cookie cutter." It is more like staying with an elderly relative in their home. Mac, the Innkeeper, was a history major in college, and ties many things together, including the history of the house, the history of the area, and his own family history.
During the "tourist season," I like to go mid-week, as it is easier getting onto and off of the Cape on those days. Off season it is especially delightful. There are special weekend deals for Holidays, Local Events, Golfing (when weather allows), History Weekends, Mystery Weekends, and even the occasional "So You Think You Want To Be An Innkeeper" educational weekends.
Mac is a wealth of information on local lore, and what to do on the Cape. Depending on your interests, he has all sorts of suggestions to visit local, usually inexpensive places, and where to shop for the best buys.
Among interesting places I have visited at Mac's suggestion are the Sandwich Glass Museum in Sandwich, the New England Fire and History Museum, in Barnstable, and The Cape Cod Patato Chip Company in Barnstable, the Yankee Cndle Shop, the Christmas Tree Shop, and Cuffy's for leisure wear. Those are only the ones that I remember!
With advanced notice, the Inn is pet friendly. Also, there are some rooms reserved in which pets are never allowed. This is to keep some rooms available for those with pet allergies.
There is a fully handicapped accessible room with an adjoining single room for those with more serious needs. After my father had his stroke my parents and I would stay in that "suite." My parents would sleep in the two single beds in the main bedroom, and I had my own bedroom and bathroom right next to them.
The food is delightful and delicuous. It is a chance for me to eat some of my favorites from my New England childhood, including Indian Pudding. Breakfast (included) consists of, among other things, homemade pastries from the Inn's kitchen. The colored glass pieces decorating the bow-front window in the breakfast room is from Mac's mother's collection. The colored glass used in the window changes seasonally.
After a pleasant dinner (included), sitting in one of the chairs in the Pub room, chatting with fellow guests or reading the local newspaper, while sipping an after-dinner drink, is the perfect end to a perfect day. « less

We a table by the fire and started our meal with the crab cakes and a very good house Chardonay. The crab cakes were light and crispy with just the right balance of crab and spices. My companion enjoyed the house Merlot with his Beef en Brochette cooked medium rare with crisp tender peppers and mushrooms. I had the Sole Gratin. The fish was fresh, the sauce was not over powering and the potato cake was a nice change from the usual rice pilaf. The waiter recommended the Bananas' Foster for desert and it was delicious, but we wished it was served in the traditional way over a crepe filled with ice cream.
A very relaxing dinner experience. The Inn's colonial atmosphere, classical background music and helpful unobtrusive staff added to the experience. « less

My husband and I and our friends went to the Colonial House Inn for one of their murder mystery weekends. Though a lot of the other couples who were going to participate in the mystery cancelled due to the weather, we still had a wonderful time in this lovely inn. The murder mystery weekend included the murder mystery weekend script, and breakfast and dinner for the weekend. It was a nice weekend away! Mac, the innkeeper, was very pleasant and offered us many suggestions of things to see in the area. The breakfast was yummy with a mixture of tasty breakfast treats- french toast, muffins, banana bread, 2 kinds of quiche, juice, coffee and tea. The meal selections were varied and very filling. We would definitely recommend the apple pie- it is to die for! « less

I found this delightful Inn while searching for a pet friendly place for my dog and I to stay during our winter getaway on Cape Cod. I was amazed. From the moment I walked in the front door I felt like family. Mac, the Innkeeper, was exceptional at knowing how to anticipate and meet every need that I might have. Each morning after a breakfast of homemade quiche and pastries, Mac would talk with me about my plans for the day, then map out the best route for my adventures. I would return in the evening, to my antique furnished room, to prepare for the evening dining experience. The staff treated me like a princess, with just the right amount of attentiveness. The food was so delicious! With a menu of items to choose from, one waitress asked me what had been my favorite. My answer - Everything! « less

When we first walked in, we were a little worried that we had made a mistake. It is an old house, and we did not know what to expect.Boy were we surprised. Yes the rooms were not Five Star. But its not like we were going to spend alot of time there anyways. Located close to all the things we wanted to see made it convenient. The rooms may not have been the greatest, but we knew that this wasn't the Hilton. They were spotlessly clean. The shower had its quirks, but once we figured it out, were fine. The only complaint with the rooms was the cable on the TV. Lousy reception. The meals that were included in the price of the room were what blew us away. The dinners were Five Star. Excellent!!!Cooked to perfection. The breakfast platter was more than we could eat. Mac was a wonderful tour help. We definitely will be going back. « less
