Hohenwald is the home of the largest elephant sanctuary in U.S. (There are only two in U.S.) You cannot go to the actual sanctuary, but, the visitor's center is wonderful. A quaint town with some nice restaurants.

This is a very small but friendly town 1 1/2 hours south of Nashville. Lots of history and nature close by. There is also an Elephant sanctuary here but not open to the public. The Elephant Discovery Center is in the main square and open to the public.

The town has grown since I had been there a few years ago. We went to Lewis & Clark Restaurant be fill-in's for a filming of a country music video. The food was good and friendly owners & staff. We ate at the Skillet Cafe for breakfast..it's a great mom and pop cafe, friendly service, good food. Nice scenic area.

Downtown was where we stayed due to proximity to our final destination. It wasn't anything special, but I felt save. The path and garden beside the Chamber of Commerce was nice. The Elephant Sanctuary learning center was fun and interesting.

We visited the Elephant Discovery Center right on the main street, and were volunteering the next day at the Elephant Sanctuary. Just there for one night, and we stayed at The Embassy Inn (only hotel on the main highway in/out of town. Had a great steak dinner at the Junkyard Dog Restaurant, and saw a bunch of race car trailers going by. We followed them and had a nice surprise - the Tennessee National Raceway dirt oval track was running their weekly Friday night races! People traveling the Natchez Trace Parkway would find this a great stopover. There was a Natural History Museum which we didn't have time to visit, and a welcome center in an old train station. Lots of character in this cute, well-kept town.
