Trout Lake is a very small town with 3 restaurants. We found them all to be pretty good, and especially liked McGowans, where we ate several times. Anyone looking for gourmet dining, nightlife, meals after 7 pm, or entertainment venues should go elsewhere. We loved it there, the quiet, the quaintness, the natural beauty -- but not for everyone.

Lovey historical lodge- decor was very updated and welcoming. Very quiet and peaceful after a long day. Bedding very comfortable! Nice to have air conditioning in a old building. Availability of food was a problem. Not the owners fault- but something you have to plan for) We were out late and up early, so eating dinner nearby was not a option. The resturants close by 7 pm- even then you get what ever is left over. Breakfast spot was supposed to be open, but during our stay it was not.

The historic lodge is right near the lake with amazing views and access to their private beach, trails, dock, kayaks, firepit, outdoor seating, etc. The open front porch and second floor balcony are wonderful! The rooms are beautifully restored, impeccably furnished with all the right touches and modern conveniences! The surrounding area is quite accommodating with local restaurants, a tavern and market, but bring any particular personal/food items you may need.

Be advised Trout Lake is a Very small rural town with basically only a small grocery, bar (the buckhorn), restaurant and gas station. Almost no cell service. The lake itself is beautiful and as with most places in the “UP” of Mich, it has a lot of character. We love it there, lots of outdoor activities nearby, great quiet place to “get away”, but it might not be for everyone.

I loved the historical architecture of the inn and the beautiful renovations that the owners have done. I will be back to see their progress a year from now. I look forward to dining on site (local eats left something to be desired) and visualizing his plans for landscaping that he shared with us.

Trout Lake has a general store, a few restaurants and a couple of motels. Don't expect a huge variety from the restaurants though, most things are fried. Aside from that, the food was still pretty good. Other than that, there really isn't much of a downtown to visit, just a few stops on the highway. Your basics to get you by while camping.
