"Cheap Motel with Nice Staff and Earthquake Safe!"
Overall Score4.0/ 5
I stayed at this motel for over a month in summer while buying a house in Tehachapi. Two people and two dogs in a room with two double beds. The best part of the hotel is the staff, the front desk and maids are excellent and friendly. The maids did a great job with what was in the room (more on that in shortly). The microwave and fridge were an unexpected bonus and made motel life a lot more bearable, as did the excellent vegetarian friendly Thai place kitty corner to the motel (they also deliver). The air conditioners are newer and even in 100 plus heat outside the rooms stayed comfortable. Mojave can be very hot and windy, very windy. The 40 channels of TV would go out periodically during high wind, as would the Internet which was slow at best. It's also right next to the railroad (as are all the motels in Mojave) and trains come by loudly every other hour or so. They are obviously working on upgrading and updating the motel, but. it's a work in progress. Literally. One day after a long week of house hunting we took the day off to rest only to get a knock at the door with someone with a saws all that didn't speak a lot of English. Normally, a hotel will warn it's guests when some sort of maintenance happens but we had no heads up, it could have been anyone at the door. The new locks they put in were nice though. They also seemed to be fighting with the sprinkler system, one day we woke up to a small lake outside our door and another day there was a fountain. The fan in our bathroom never worked (the casing hung off at an angle) and there was almost no water pressure in the shower. The glass doors in the shower were broken at the door handle and there was paint patch on the wall. My mattress was horrible and sunk in on one side, but it was bearable after we rotated it, I hope they have replaced it by now. The pool is always full of kids, so if you are traveling with kids that would be a plus I imagine. I actually rather hear kids playing than other things. Lots of people with pets, but many did not pick up after their dogs. Not the motel's fault, but someone needs to stay on top of that, especially with kids running around. It can be a bit of a party motel on the weekends but nothing like some places we stayed at and usually by 10 pm it was quiet. We never felt unsafe or annoyed by the other occupants. Parking lot is well lit and clean and there is a gravel lot next door for big rigs, which was also a nice place to walk the dogs around and watch the sun set over the mountains. We rode out the 7.1 Ridgeway earthquake here, felt it coming and just sat on the beds as they shook. Not even a crack in the walls or anything falling off the shelves, this place is solid! All in all it was half the price of staying in Tehachapi (18 minutes away by freeway) so it was worth the minor issues.
