Graph of Hannibal, MO Hotel Prices for Next 20 Days

Rates shown are nightly rates before taxes and do not necessarily reflect all Hannibal, MO discounts available. The chart reflects the cheapest Hannibal hotel for each day and each star rating category.

With a deep-seated history going back long before American settlers ever came to the area, the region was originally occupied by a diverse group of Native American Tribes. The first non-native settlement was established by Moses Bates in 1819, who named the town Hannibal after the nearby Hannibal Creek. Local Native Americans named this creek, whose name translates loosely to "Bear Creek."

Geographically, Hannibal is located on the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks the border between Missouri and Illinois. Situated well away from larger cities, this is a great place to escape from fast-paced city life for a while. There may not be a major metropolis nearby, but there is still plenty for you to experience in Hannibal.

When is the best time of year to visit Hannibal, MO?

Hannibal is one of those rare places that provides the full experience for every season. Snow-covered winters, vibrantly colorful autumn, green springs, and hot summer days that will have you itching to cool off in a nearby lake. With summer temperatures approaching triple digits, it's no surprise that warmer months are not among the most popular for tourists. So, when is the best time to visit Hannibal?

The most active tourism seasons are in late spring, between April and June and again in early fall, between September and October. During these months, the area typically enjoys clear skies and temperatures that average in the mid-80's. This is really the best time to visit, especially if you're interested in spending a lot of time outdoors and enjoying all of the history and nature the area has to explore. Keep in mind, though, because these are high-volume tourism months, hotel rooms may be difficult to come by and your nightly rates are going to be higher than any other time of year. It's a good idea to book your room as early as possible to make sure you get the best possible rate.

What attractions does the city of Hannibal have to offer?

Hannibal, Missouri, is filled with rich history and surrounded by plenty of nature to explore. With so many things to experience, it can be difficult to decide what to see first. Here are some of the most popular destinations sought out by other tourists in the area. This is just a starting point though, so don't be afraid to explore and see what you can find for yourself.

The Rockcliffe Mansion was constructed over several years, between 1898 and 1900 by John J Cruikshank, Jr. This 30-room mansion is situated to overlook the Mississippi River and still contains many of the original furnishings and decor from its glory days. Guided and self-guided tours are available, offering a rare glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of 19th-century noblemen. You may be surprised that the wealthy people of the time lived a life that rivals some of today's most rich and powerful men.

No trip to the hometown of Mark Twain would be complete without taking in as much history as you can about the man himself. There is no better place to start this journey of discovery than the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum. One popular exhibit of note at this historic location is Tom Sawyer's Fence. Marked by an information placard which recounts the story in which Tom convinced his buddies that he was doing them a favor by allowing them to not only paint his iconic fence but also convinced them to pay him for the honor of doing so. There is also plenty to learn about Mark Twain's childhood and how he would eventually become one of America's most iconic writers.

Speaking of Mark Twain and his prolific characters, a trip to the Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse and Tom and Huck's Statue is an absolute must when you visit Hannibal. The lighthouse is easy enough to find, with even more history to uncover about Twain's life. The statue is a bit more difficult to locate, so you may have to ask a local for directions. Once you find it though, you'll be surprised at just how many people seek out this little-known national treasure. Be sure to snap a few selfies with the boys so you have later proof that you stood where some of America's most beloved stories unfolded.

A rich history and all things Mark Twain aside, Hannibal is surrounded by plenty of beautiful nature to explore. Seek out some of the area's hiking trails and picnic areas for a nice afternoon outdoors. And don't be afraid to get into the region's deep-seated history of exploration by doing a little yourself!
