Military constructions by Spanish engineers have always been a supreme example of their skills. Here is a photo of a fortress that was built in Ibiza (before the night clubs). It is based on the Castle of St Philip of Cartagena of the Indies, where Blas de Lezo culminated his glorious campaign against Perfidious Albion.
The Island of Ibiza, because of its strategic position in the Mediterranean was throughout history an important military and commercial enclave.
So, in 1554, Prince Felipe, the future Felipe II, commisioned the construction of a new fortress. The original project by Calvi was taken up many years later by the Italian engineer Fratín and remained until the 18th century without any significant alterations.

Bossa Beach
Playa den Bossa
~5.69 miles from Playa de S'Estanyol city center
Hotels Close to Bossa Beach
The longest stretch of beach on the island, it is dotted with Bars and Cafés offering a variety of scenes from the super trendy to the more laid back. The clear waters cover a sandy sea bed making it ideal for ballgames and safe for younger children. There is little shade so take coverups. Excellent views of Dalt Vila
(the Ibiza Old Town) and close-ups of low flying aircraft.
When the south wind blows this beach is very popular with the island's windsurfers, who take advantage of the bump and jump conditions caused by the choppy swell.
The far end of the beach (away from Ibiza Town, towards the watch tower) is calmer and quieter than the Ibiza end, less people and much less house music. For those of you looking for the definitive Ibiza beach party, wander along to Bora Bora Bar (rou...

Named after the salt lakes in the south of Ibiza, the beach at Las Salinas is the southern most tip of the island and the most popular with celebrities...especially footballers!
The very long, wide crescent of pale sandy beach is bordered by pine woods. The water is crystal clear with super breakers that appear on windy days, perfect for body-surfing. Good for adventure walks as the surrounding terrain is Ibiza's Wildlife Conservation Area.
During the summer months, Las Salinas is the 'in' beach...

Beautiful and trendy beach surrounded by pines and jagges cliffs, very popular with boat owners.
This conservation area of natural beauty has to be one of the last outposts of paradise. Overlooked only by a few exquisitely architected homes high up on the surrounding green hills, the white pebbly beach is dotted here and there with the shade of pine trees before sloping to the glittering, crystal clear waters. Entering the water can be a faff, as pebbles are uncomfortable to walk on but it's worth the effort to swim in pure turquoise! Or head towards the 'make do' sandy paths cleared in the sea bed by the rest...

Part of Sant Antoni's harbourside promenade, Passeig de ses Fonts is an area which was developed in the early 1990s to improve the appearance of the town. There are many plants, including palm trees and rubber plants, as well as massive fountains, which are illuminated by night. Across the square are a host of restaurants and cafes offering a view over Sant Antoni Bay. It is also the best place from which to watch the massive Fireworks Display which celebrates the fiesta of Saint Bartholomew on the 24 August.

Benirras Beach
Ibiza Island
~11.26 miles from Playa de S'Estanyol city center
Hotels Close to Benirras Beach
A well kept secret by the locals, Benirras has a wide curved beach of soft sand that gently slopes into the sea. There is no shade on the beach so cover-ups are necessary, however, the parking is shaded under mature pines. There are a couple of very good and reasonably priced restaurants on one side of the beach, but no other development. The area is very popular at weekends - this is where many locals go. Access is by dirt track via Porto San Miguel (Puerto Balanzat), or a narrow lane off the San Miguel (San Miquel) to San Juan (Sant Joan Baptista) road. A gem !
Don't miss watching the sunsets on Sundays, go early to ensure a parking space. The hippies arrive about 30 mins before sunset and the place becomes tranquil, all you can hear is the sound of the bongo drums being played to the s...

Cala D'hort Beach
Ibiza Island
~14.70 miles from Playa de S'Estanyol city center
Hotels Close to Cala D'hort Beach
A small, beloved beach with a fantastic view of the mysterious island of Es Vedra, which lies only several hundred meters from the shore. The beach itself is sandy to one side, more pebbly to the other, and in summer is extremely popular.
Backed by cliffs, it is situated at the end of a steep road. So if you're a nervous driver you may not want to attempt it as during busy times the road is reduced to single track due to the number of parked vehicles.
This is a lovely beach to body surf on breezy days when the waves get a little higher and bash the shore.
Tip: visit this beach in summer to watch the sunset.
Facilities: Three excellent beach restaurants (one renowned for it's fresh fish). Two are on the beach whilst the third, Es Boldado, is accessed from the road to the bea...

Cala Conta Beach
Ibiza Island
~14.86 miles from Playa de S'Estanyol city center
Hotels Close to Cala Conta Beach
Cala Conta has fabulous views of the islands dotted around the coastline here and beautiful turquoise waters, making it one of the best beaches on the island.
There are two stretches of sand, one back by a rocky coastline, the other by sand dunes. A third, small cove, used by naturists, is at the far end and reached by steps hewn into the rock. There's no shade so take cover-ups. The shallow water is safe for children, whilst the more experienced swimmers can aim for the island offshore.
The views from the beach in summer take in the amazing sunsets - so book yourself a table at one of the restaurants and enjoy one of natures greatest spectacles!
In the high season the beach is very popular, so come either in the early morning or later in the afternoon.
Facilities: The two main...
