It's difficult to believe that all relics associated with Christ are not the exclusive patrimony of the Vatican, but here at the Basílica de la Merced, under a protective crystal dome next to a money collection box, is what is said to be a sliver of the actual cross. How did it get here? The story goes that Spain's King Alfonso XIII donated the artifact in 1912 to Chilean mercenaries. As intriguing are the Basilica's neo-Renaissance architecture and its baroque Bavarian pulpit. The church's religious museum, oddly enough, boasts a sizable collection of Easter Island art (more artifacts than you'll find at the Hanga Roa museum on that island, anyway), including a rongorongo tablet, one of only 29 left in the world.

The Former National Congress Building (ex Congreso Nacional) is the former home of the Chilean Congress. Congress met in this building in central Santiago until Salvador Allende's socialist government was overthrown by Augusto Pinochet's military coup d'état on September 11, 1973.
During the Pinochet dictatorship, Congress was moved to new premises in Valparaíso; the old building was declared a national monument in 1976 and between 1990 and 2006 housed the ministry of foreign affairs. The Senate moved its offices in Santiago to this building in December 2000. On January 26, 2006 the Chamber of Deputies recovered its old offices.
Work began on the original building under President Manuel Montt Torres (1851–1861), but the construction was not completed until 1876, during the presidency of Federico Errázuriz Zañartu. The building was destroyed by fire in 1895, rebuilt, and reopened in 1901, during the Parliamentary Era. It stands on Morandé 441 near the Blvd. Liberador Bernado O'Higgins, amidst a remarkable garden that contains a variety of exotic trees and plant life.
The building is open to the public on a limited basis.

The Estadio Monumental David Arellano is a football stadium in Santiago, Chile. Built in 1989 the stadium has a current spectator capacity of 45,000. Originally, the stadium could hold up to 65,000 spectators but was dramatically reduced for security reasons. The highest ever recorded attendance was 69,305 spectators which occurred in 1992 in a match featuring Chilean rivals Colo-Colo and Universidad de Chile. The stadium was also home to the 1991 Copa Libertadores final won by Colo-Colo. Its principal tenant and owner is the corporate entity Blanco y Negro that runs Colo-Colo and for which Chilean millionaire and Presidential candidate Sebastián Piñera is a major shareholder. The stadium is also rented out to club Santiago Morning and other Chilean teams that require holding games on the international tournament scale.
