Things To Do in Santorini: Nea Kameni Volcano #1 of 24 Things To Do in Santorini
Nea Kameni Volcano
Santorini Island
~0.02 miles from Santorini city center
Hotels Close to Nea Kameni Volcano
Nea Kameni is a small uninhabited Greek island of volcanic origin located within the flooded caldera of Santorini. Nea Kameni and the neighbouring small island Palea Kameni (the new and old 'burnt islands') have formed over the past two millennia by repeated eruptions of dacite lava and ash. Major eruptions over the past 300 years took place in 1707-1712, 1866-1870, 1925-1928, and 1939-1941. The last small eruption happened in 1950, and involved lava dome extrusion. Nea Kameni is nearly round and has a diameter of approximately 2 kilometers and an area of 3.4 kilometers2. Nea Kameni is monitored closely by scientists from the Institute for the Study and Monitoring of the Santorini Volcano (ISMOSAV[3]), and is a protected scientific site. The nearly barren island is visited daily by dozens of tourist boats throughout the summer. The visitors take a well maintained gravel path to the 130-meter-high volcanic crater, from which wisps of a sulfurous steam rise, transforming the environment in places into a "yellow wasteland". The island is arid but there is a carpet of red grassy succulents on the thin soil in summer.

Museum of Prehistoric Thira
Santorini Island
~2.21 miles from Santorini city center
Hotels Close to Museum of Prehistoric Thira
The new Museum of Prehistoric Thira (or Thera), which opened in 2000, has several frescoes and finds from Ancient Akrotiri, along with many objects imported from Crete and the northeastern Aegean Islands. Some of the pots on display - cups, jugs and pithoi - are delicately painted with motifs familiar from the wall paintings. Note the fresco fragments with the painted swallows (who flocked here because they loved the cliffs) and the women in Minoan dresses. Fossilized olive leaves from 60,000 BC prove the olive to be indigenous. It's best to visit both the Museum of Prehistoric Thira and the archaeological site at Ancient Akrotiri - in the same day, if possible. At present, the museum occupies only a small part of its building, and expansions are anticipated in the near future. Aegean Maritime Museum is a maritime museum in Mykonos, Greece. The founder and chairman of the Museum, George M. Drakopoulos received the Athens Academy Award and the World Ship Trust's Award for Individual Achievement for the foundation of the museum. A non-profit institution, it was founded in 1983 and in 1985 opened to the public in a Mykonian building of the 19th century located in the area known as Tria Pigad in the town centre. The museum aims to undertake the preservation, promotion and study of the Greek maritime history and tradition, and specializes in merchant ship history in the Aegean Sea. The Aegean Maritime Museum was the first ever Greek museum to restore living historical exhibits as they were originally designed and built. Exhibits that are living restorations include the The "Armenistis" lighthouse (built in 1890) which operates in the museum garden, the ship that laid cables in the Aegean, "Thalis o Milesios" (built in 1909) and the "Perama" sailing ship, "Evangelistria" (built in 1940) which are located on the museum wharf at the Paleo Phaliro marina. The garden of the Aegean Maritime Museum aside from displaying the lighthouses has a number of ancient sailor marble gravestones collected from the islands of Myconos and Delos.
