Customs House is a building located on Queen Street by the Brisbane River in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was originally used for the collection of customs duty and was both completed and opened in 1889,[1] when Queensland was a British colony, replacing the original Customs House located at Petrie Bight. Construction was finished in three years at a cost of £38,346.[2] Customs House is a Brisbane landmark known for its distinctive copper dome.[3] The building was designed by Charles McLay of the Queensland Colonial Architect's Office. Despite no government in the country having a coat of arms at the time, the building features a depiction on its facade of a shield between an emu and kangaroo.[1] The downstream end of the Brisbane central business district was selected to spur the development of wharves in the precinct known as Petrie Bight.[3] The building is now leased by the University of Queensland and was refurbished in the 1990s. There is a restaurant and function centre within the building, and regular concerts and art exhibitions are also held here. The Long Room was once the place customs business was transacted.[3] Today the room is used for lectures and dinners. Customs House is within reach of the CityCat catamaran ferry service, as well as the Free Loop Bus.

The site was selected as a public garden in 1828 by Charles Fraser. The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens were established in 1855 and consists of approximately 20 hectares. The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens were once called "Queens Park", and the 1905 Curator's cottage is now the City Gardens Cafe. Some of the older trees planted in the Gardens were the first of their species to be planted in Australia, due to the first curator, Walter Hill, who engaged in experiments to acclimatise plants. Due to the proximity to the river, the Botanic Gardens have been flooded eight times between 1870 - 1974. With many plants being washed away, the Brisbane City Council established a new botanic gardens at Mount Coottha.

Parliament House in Brisbane is the seat of the Parliament of Queensland, housing the Legislative Assembly. It is situated on the corner of George Street and Alice Street. Parliament House is bordered by the Queensland University of Technology and the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. When Queensland was established as a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859 its new Parliament met in temporary quarters at the Old Convict Barracks in Queen Street. This facility sufficed whilst the Queensland Government directed its funds to the construction of Government House. It was in 1863 that plans for a new Parliament House were finally selected from an Australia-wide design competition, and in 1864 the foundation stone for the building was laid. The George Street frontage was completed in 1868 in French Renaissance style; it was built by Joshua Jeays. The original zinc roof was replaced in the 1980's with one constructed from Mount Isa copper. The colonnades were built in 1878 and construction on the Alice Street frontage commenced in 1887. A 22-storey Parliamentary Annexe building was completed in 1979, built within the grounds of the Old Parliament House. Art exhibitions and other displays are frequently staged in the spacious ground floor areas of the Annexe. Free public guided tours of the Parliament are available each day. Also, a gift shop, selling souvenirs and memorabilia, is located in the main foyer. Parliament House was also used as one of the sites for the 1980s Australian series of Mission: Impossible.

The Gabba is a major sports stadium in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. It is named after the suburb of Woolloongabba, in which it is located. The official name of the ground, however, is still Brisbane Cricket Ground. The land on which the ground sits was first set aside for use as a cricket ground in 1895. The first cricket match was held on the site on 19 December 1896 between Parliament and The Press. The Gabba was not used for interstate or international cricket until 1931. The first Sheffield Shield match scheduled for The Gabba was to be played between 31 January 1931 and 4 February 1931. However, it was washed out without the captains' even bothering to toss a coin. The first cricket Test match at The Gabba was played between Australia and South Africa between 27 November and 3 December 1931. Over the years, The Gabba has hosted athletics, Australian rules football, baseball, concerts, cricket, cycling, rugby league, rugby union, soccer and pony and greyhound races. Between 1993 and 2005, The Gabba was redeveloped in six stages at a cost of $128,000,000 AUD. The dimensions of the playing field are now 170.6 metres (east-west) by 149.9 metres (north-south). The seating capacity of the ground is now 42,000. In its appearance the Gabba now almost resembles a mini Melbourne Cricket Ground complete with light towers and a gigantic modern grandstand ringing the ground providing an intimidating and noisy atmosphere for visiting teams.
