The Altstadt (literally "old town") is one of the 49 boroughs of the German city of Düsseldorf, and belongs to City District (District 1). The Düsseldorfer Altstadt is known as the longest bar in the world (»längste Theke der Welt«), because the small Old Town has more than 300 bars and discothèques. Famous is the special beer from Düsseldorf, the Altbier ("old beer"), brewed from an old traditional recipe, which is only brewed in a few places in the world since the end of the 19th century.
The Old Town has an area of half a square kilometer (which is less than a quarter of a percent of the whole city) and has 2297 inhabitants (2000), less than half a percent of the population of Düsseldorf. The density of population is thus 4594 inh./km².

The steps from the lower promenade to the Burgplatz, also known as "Spanish Steps" after the big one in Rome, has become a popular meeting point in the summer months. A lighting installation has been erected on a group of three masts in 2002. It illuminates the steps with changing colored light. Behind the stairs, the "Schlossturm" (castle tower) is all that is left of the Castle of Düsseldorf which burned down in 1872. The renovated tower is now used by the Schifffahrtmuseum (ship museum).

During the Napoleonic Wars, the earl's art collection was inherited by the Wittelsbach family and moved to Munich, prompting the Prussian government-- who had annexed the Düsseldorf region after Napoleon had surrendered-- to change it into a Royal Arts Academy in Düsseldorf, in 1819.
In the 1850s, the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf became internationally-renowned, with many students coming from Scandinavia, Russia and the USA to learn, amongst other things, the genre and landscape painting associated with the "The Düsseldorf School of Painting".
