Grand Teton National Park is a United States National Park located in northwestern Wyoming, south of Yellowstone National Park. The park is named after the Grand Teton, which, at 13,770 feet (4,197 m), is the tallest mountain in the Teton Range.
The name "Tetons" originally was intended to describe several hills near the town of Arco, Idaho. They were named by a French trapper who thought that they resembled the female body. (Ergo tétons, the French word for "nipples" or "teats".) Many years later the name was mistakenly applied to the mountains of present day Grand Teton National Park due to the poor map-making and map-reading standards of the time.
Grand Teton National Park was established on February 26, 1929. The park covers 484 square miles (1,250 km2) of land and water.
There are nearly 200 miles (320 km) of trails for hikers to enjoy in Grand Teton National Park.

It's a world-class resort with an old West attitude. Y'ever hear the saying, "You can put a cowboy in a tux, but he's still just a cowboy?" Well, it's kinda like that. Our buildings may change, but our spirit stays the same. While known best for our 2,500 in-bound acres of bowls, groomers, steeps and deeps, Jackson Hole has an off- and on-slope adventure for everyone.
Beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers and riders have a wide choice of programs from which to choose. Our novice programs, including Learn to Turn(TM) and Burton's Learn-To-Ride(TM) specialize in introducing newcomers to snow sports using equipment created specifically for the new enthusiast. We've created package deals that include lift tickets, ski or snowboard rentals and lessons.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Alpine Guides can show you secret stashes in-bounds or safely guide you through the backcountry. Our children's programs, available for ages six months through 14 years, include Daycare, Fort Wyoming, Sky-Cology, and Team Extreme to name a few.
During the evening, treat yourself and your family to great apres, dinner and entertainment at one of the many restaurants and watering holes in Teton Village.
And, although the entire mountain remains accessible via chairlift, Jackson Hole welcomed back "Big Red" in 2008. Visitors are now able to ride the 100-passenger aerial tram 4,139 vertical feet from top to bottom in just nine minutes!

Menor's Ferry Historic Site

Hotels Close to Menor's Ferry Historic Site
Menor's Ferry was a river ferry that crossed the Snake River near the present-day Moose, Wyoming. The site was homesteaded by Bill Menor in 1892-94. During the 1890s it was the only homestead west of the river. Menor operated the ferry until 1918, selling to Maude Noble, who continued operations until 1927, when a bridge was built at Moose. In 1929 the Rockefeller family acquired the site as part of their assemblage of property in Jackson Hole that was eventually donated to the National Park Service for incorporation into Grand Teton National Park in 1953.
The house is unusual in its application of classical forms to rustic log construction, an effect heightened by the whitewashed walls of the buildings.

The Miller Cabin complex consists of three buildings that were the residence of Robert A. Miller, the first superintendent of Teton National Monument. A house, a barn and a cabin built by the U.S. Forest Service are included. The property was eventually transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in what became the National Elk Refuge. The buildings are a component of the closely related Grace and Robert Miller Ranch.
Robert Miller was born in Wisconsin in 1863, and took up permanent residence in Jackson Hole in 1885, settling on land along Flat Creek. A prominent local citizen, Miller helped to organize the town of Jackson, Wyoming in 1901 and was president of the local bank. His wife served two terms as mayor of Jackson in the 1920s. Miller was chosen by A.A. Anderson, administrator of the new Yellowstone Timberland Reserve to be administrator of the Teton Division of the reserve from 1903, running the operation from his cabin.
As a result of local rancher, photographer and Wyoming legislator S.N. Leek's efforts, the National Elk Refuge was established in 1912 from nearly 2,000 acres (810 ha) of Miller's land, and was administered from the house adjoining Miller's cabin.
The original cabin was Miller's home during his time with the Forest Service. The adjoining two story house was used as the headquarters for the National Elk Refuge in its early years.

National Elk Refuge
Jackson Hole WY

Hotels Close to National Elk Refuge
The National Elk Refuge is located in the U.S. state of Wyoming and was created in 1912 to protect habitat and provide sanctuary for the largest elk (also known as the wapiti) herd on Earth. The refuge borders the town of Jackson, Wyoming on the northeast while Bridger-Teton National Forest is to the east and Grand Teton National Park borders the refuge to the north. It is home to an average of 7,500 elk each winter. The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Elk migrate from as far away as southern Yellowstone National Park and historically migrated south of the present location of the refuge into southwestern Wyoming during the fall, wintering on grassy plains that were usually snowfree most of the winter. During the spring, the herd would follow the retreating snows back into the Yellowstone National Park region. The original size of the elk herd has been estimated to have been in excess of 25,000. The expansion of the town of Jackson blocked off the migration route by the end of the 19th century and the elk herd was severely reduced in size due to the hostile climate and lack of food supply.
A movement to protect and enlarge the remaining herd was commenced in the early 1900s, resulting in the creation of the refuge. The elk herd is kept alive during the hard winters of Jackson Hole through feeding and culling of the herd, a lottery based hunting permit program, which is highly regulated. The elk have antlers which are shed each year and the Boy Scouts of America have been collecting the antlers under permit since the 1950s and selling them at auction under agreement that 80% of the proceeds are returned to the refuge to feed, research and manage the herd to assure its survival. Ten to eleven thousand pounds (4,500 to 5,000 kg) of antlers are auctioned each year. The increase in value has resulted in a commensurate rise in antler theft.
The refuge also provides horse drawn sleigh rides to the public during the winter months so that visitors have the opportunity to see portions of the herd up close. The furthest consistent migration of elk to the refuge is currently from the southern portion of Yellowstone National Park, making it the second longest ungulate migration in the lower 48 states. (The migration of pronghorn between the Green River basin and Jackson Hole in Wyoming is longer).
The refuge is nearly 25,000 acres (101 km²) of meadows and marshes along the valley floor, sagebrush and rock outcroppings along the mountain foothills. The largest single herd of Bison under federal management, comprising 1,000 plus individuals, also winter on the refuge. Bighorn sheep can be found here, along with Pronghorn, Mule deer and even a few Trumpeter swans along Flat Creek, which flows out of the refuge south into the town of Jackson. Rare sightings of Wolves and Grizzly have occurred and a total of 47 mammal species and 147 bird species have been documented on the refuge.

Cunningham Cabin

The Cunningham Cabin is a double-pen log cabin in Grand Teton National Park. The cabin was built as a homestead in Jackson Hole and represents an adaptation of an Appalachian building form to the West. The cabin was built by John Pierce Cunningham, who arrived in Jackson Hole in 1885 and subsisted as a trapper until he established the small ranch in 1888. The Cunninghams left the valley for Idaho in 1928, when land was being acquired for the future Grand Teton National Park.
J. Pierce Cunningham was one of the original county commissioners chosen when Teton County was organized in 1923. He was also, at various times, justice of the peace, postmaster and game warden. [5]
The cabin is a double-pen or dog-trot style building with a room on either side of the central breezeway or "dog-trot." The form is Appalacian in origin.
After 1895 the Cunninghams used the cabin as a barn or a smithy. A small fortification was erected in 1895 during unrest involving the Bannack indians. Traces of foundations survive. The cabin was the scene of a shootout in 1899 between a posse and two horse thieves, who were killed at the scene
