Split Rock Lighthouse
3713 Split Rock Lighthouse Rd Two Harbors MN
~16.25 miles from Two Harbors city center
Hotels Close to Split Rock Lighthouse
Split Rock Lighthouse is a lighthouse located southwest of Silver Bay, Minnesota, USA on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The structure was designed by lighthouse engineer Ralph Russell Tinkham and was completed in 1910 by the United States Lighthouse Service at a cost of $75,000, including the buildings and the land. It was built in response to the loss of ships during the famous Mataafa Storm of 1905, in which 29 ships were lost on Lake Superior. One of these shipwrecks, the Madeira, is located just north of the lighthouse. The light was first lit on July 31, 1910.
It is built on a 130-foot (40 m) sheer cliff eroded by wave action from a diabase sill containing inclusions of anorthosite. The hexagonal lighthouse tower is a steel-framed brick structure with concrete trim on a concrete foundation set into the rock. It is topped with a steel lantern. The lighthouse features a large third order, bi-valve type Fresnel lens manufactured by Barbier, Bernard and Turenne Company in Paris, France. The lens floats on a bearing surface of liquid mercury. The lens is rotated by an elaborate clockwork mechanism that is powered by counterweights running down the center of the tower. When completed, the lighthouse was lighted with an incandescent oil vapor lamp that burned kerosene. In 1940, the station was electrified and the lamp was replaced with a 1000 watt electric bulb.
Split Rock was also outfitted with a fog signal housed in a building next to the light tower. The original signal was a pair of steam sirens driven by two Franklin 30 hp (22 kW) gasoline-driven air compressors manufactured by Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company. In 1932 the gasoline engines were replaced with diesel engines. The steam sirens were replaced with a Type F-2-T diaphone (be-you) type signal in 1936. When the station was electrified four years later, the fog signal began to be powered by electricity. The fog signal was discontinued in 1961.
The light was retired in 1969 by the U. S. Coast Guard. The lighthouse is now part of the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and is operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. The site includes the original tower and lens, the fog signal building, the oil house, and the three keepers' houses. It is restored to appear as it did in the late 1920s. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Notwithstanding that the light has been retired, every November 10 the lighthouse emits a light in memory of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald which sank on that date in 1975.
The United States Postal Service issued a stamp that featured the light on June 17, 1995. It was one of five lighthouses chosen for the "Lighthouses of the Great Lakes" series postage stamp designed by Howard Koslow in 1995. There was one lighthouse chosen on each of the Great Lakes. The five lighthouses are Split Rock Light on Lake Superior, St Joseph Light on Lake Michigan, Spectacle Reef Light on Lake Huron, Marblehead Light (Ohio) on Lake Erie and Thirty Mile Point Light on Lake Ontario http://www.mnhs.org/places/sites/srl/

Hotels Close to Fairlawn Mansion and Museum
Fairlawn was built as the home of Martin Pattison who lived here with his wife Grace and six children. Pattison, a wealthy lumber and mining baron, envisioned Fairlawn as a home befitting his success. Construction began in 1889 and was completed in 1891 for a cost of $150,000.
The 42 room mansion is built in the popular Queen Anne Victorian style of architecture. The proud four story turret makes Fairlawn a familiar landmark along Harborview Parkway. Other classic features of the Queen Anne style include the home’s prominent porch, steeply gabled roof, and the use of contrasting colors and textures on the exterior trim.
Following Martin’s death in 1918, Grace Pattison donated Fairlawn to the Superior Children’s Home and Refuge Association to be used as an orphanage. Approximately 2000 children called Fairlawn home during the 42 years it was a children’s home, from 1920-1962.
In 1963 the City of Superior purchased Fairlawn for $12,500. The mansion had been slated for demolition in accordance with Grace Pattison’s will after the Children’s Home closed its doors, but civic leaders and members of the Pattison family were able to save Fairlawn through a loophole in the will. Fairlawn Mansion has operated as a city owned museum ever since then. An award winning Victorian house museum, today it is preserved for residents and area visitors alike as a poignant reminder of Superior's heritage.

Wessman Arena
2701 Catlin Ave. Superior WI - 715-394-8361
~29.99 miles from Two Harbors city center
Hotels Close to Wessman Arena
For several years, the Yellowjacket hockey team called the ice of the Superior Municipal Ice Arena their home. Then in the late 1960's, the university decided the time was right to build an on-campus ice arena. The state-of-the-art facility, known as Siinto S. Wessman Arena, was completed in time for the 1970-71 season. It opened on November 15, 1970, when the University of Wisconsin Badgers came to Superior to play the first game in the facility against the Yellowjackets. The Badgers won the game 13-1, the first of hundreds of games to be played at the 'Jackets new home.
Wessman Arena is a year-round multi-purpose facility. In addition to hockey, car shows, trade shows, concerts, wedding receptions and graduation ceremonies are among the events held there when the ice is out. When the ice is in, Superior Senior High School and the Superior Figure Skating Club call the arena home. But it is still Yellowjacket Hockey that makes people come through the doors.
Among those games are the two NCHA regular season titles (1994, 2001) and the three NCHA playoff titles (1994, 1997, 2001) that were clinched on home ice. There have also been three Division III Final Fours (1994, 2000, 2007) played at Wessman Arena. Middlebury College is the only school to host more Final Fours at the Division III level.
