“Great Location with Free Parking; But Missing Something”

For my 34th birthday, my husband surprised me with a trip to Chicago to visit my sister for the weekend. For my first night there, we thought it would be fun to stay in the city. We decided on the Best Western River North because of it's location- within a few blocks of the Magnificent Mile; and because of the price. For the area it was one of the lower rates we found, plus it included free parking-which seems incredibly rare for the city.
Check-in was satisfactory. The front desk clerk was cordial, but didn't go out of her way to explain much. Just that we would give our room number to the parking attendant so we could get our parking pass.
The layout of the hotel is a little confusing. There are some rooms accessible from the lobby and some that are not. There was no information in the room about check-out time until the statement was slipped under the door.
For the price we weren't expecting the rooms to be glitzy or luxurious. One positive was that it seemed to be clean, though the bathroom floor was finished with a rough substance somewhat like bumpy rubber. I am not sure if that type of floor could be thoroughly cleaned. There were no liners in the trashcans. The bathroom itself was quite small. Just enough room to get in, and try not to step back into the toilet while trying to shut the door. While in the bathroom, I could hear the guest in the next room on the phone. Actually I could hear his entire end of the conversation more clearly than I could hear my sister on the other side of the bathroom door. I would say the decor of the room was drab and overall the hotel itself seemed very old.
If you want to watch tv (situated on top of a dresser that is next to the bed) from anywhere but sitting at the desk or standing next to the bed in front of the window (located across from the tv), you will have to turn it at an angle.
The bed was hard and really flat, but the pillows were great. During the night, the temperature dropped so by morning the room was pretty chilly. No problem, we just turned on the heat a little. Well once we turned it on, it wouldn't turn off. We had it on low, but the room soon became stifling. Fortunately, the window was easy to open to let in some air.
To sum it up, if you are just looking for a simple affordable place to sleep (and not much else), and not pay through the nose for parking, then this is the place for you. « less

Thank you for writing a review of us. We are glad that we could satisfactorily accommodate you but we're disappointed we didn't make a better impression during your stay. We are sorry you had issues with your heating/cooling unit and we hope the staff was alerted to the issue so as to have the opportunity to address it. If you should see fit to visit Chicago again, we'd love another chance to improve upon your last stay and to give you an exceptional experience in Chicago.

We stayed here for a reunion with some other friends and loved it. The hotel overall is great, the rooms were nice and very spacious. The bed is one of the most comfortable we have slept on in a while and very clean. Definitely would stay here again because the rates were great for a hotel on the Magnificent Mile and the location was perfect.
The reason I gave this hotel a 4 instead of 5 stars is that we did encounter a few staff members who were extremely rude. Most of the staff was just great but there was one bellman and one front desk person who we ran into several times during our four night stay and they were quite rude every time. The other staff was great though.
Also, the entry to this hotel is not at all convenient. There is supposedly an elevator somewhere in the parking garage that would take you to the lobby but we never found it. Three out of the four of us had children in strollers, one of them had twins in a double stroller, and every time we went in and out it was a bit of a fiasco trying to get the strollers up or down the stairs and through two sets of doors that do not have automatic opening. Once we got up the stairs it took us three trips on the elevator to get up to our rooms since the tiny elevator would hold a single stroller and 3 or 4 others or a double stroller and 2 or 3 other people. Not terribly convenient but it still wouldn't be a deal breaker for me because of the price. « less

Since I was coming to town for my daughter's bachelorette party anyway, I thought I'd stay at the River North to see if we'd made the right decision for her wedding party later in the month. Frankly, with a big convention in town that same weekend, our options were limited, and the prices highly inflated, but we were still able to get some good deals at the River North for June. I especially wanted to see the family suite that we have booked for the bridesmaids/bride to use for wedding prep, and Michelle, the day managar was very generous with her time. She not only took me upstairs to see a vacant suite, but she answered any questions I had. While the rooms are a little small, they are very clean. My only complaint is that, for the money, there are no refrigerators nor microwaves in any of the "standard" rooms. Also, in the family suite, there is a small dorm-size frig, but no microwave. Again, Michelle came to the rescue and offered to provide a microwave for the bridal party suite, and a refrigerator for the room for the parents of the bride and groom. All in all, I'm hoping that things go well in a couple weeks. Everyone at the desk was very helpful as well. Whenever I call, the desk staff seems very attentive, and Wallace the concierge, has been invaluable in helping me secure a limo driver for the big day. « less

I have stayed here 5 times now and still can not get over the fact that it is so close and easy to go anywhere you need. Free parking is a large draw but if you dont have a vechile you can walk to many dining options or take public transit. The place is old but I always see how they are cleaning and updating the facilities. On this trip the place was filled with Cardinals fans here for games at Wrigley Field and every one seemed to be very happy with the hotel. I will be back on my many trips to the windy city. « less

Testimonials: Why use Hotel Planner?
"I think this site is amazing! I can't wait to use this site more! I still can't believe the "meeting planner" part of the site is free!" J.J. - Albany, NY
"Thanks Kevin! Your site was a huge success for me and I will definitely use it again. We ended up booking a total of 44 rooms, with different checking-in check-out days, times, people, etc., and Steve has been awesome to work with. Also, Steve is making special arrangements for an "after hours" tradition.I need to make group reservations at least twice a year and I now have a website that makes that a whole lot easier!"
