We spent two nights here in mid-May 2013. The condition of our two-bedroom ground-floor apartment was impeccable, if a bit dated (Clinton-era faux-stone details and bedroom TVs). Clean fridge, clean dishes, flat screen TV worked well, excellent lighting in the room, convenient Pepsi machine. The all ages pool had a concession shack as well as a bar and several employees keeping things lively with games for adults and kids.
My wife and I both experienced some back discomfort, but I hesitate to blame the beds. My back was already hurt, and she is very accustomed to our memory foam bed at home. Older or heavier guests may want to ascertain exactly what they will be sleeping on.
I watch out for nuisances and hazards. Didn't see a single one. The property was consistently buzzing with workers performing maintenance of one kind or another from clean, well-equipped carts.
The front desk is quite busy, however ... and there is the time-share presentation you can get roped into if you're not careful. Also, I must point out that the mini-golf on site was in reasonable, but not excellent repair. « less

We stayed three nights at Mystic Dunes last week while we visited Orlando and Universal Studios. While the decor was dated, we thought the $55 a night was excellent. Check in was quick, and thanks to previous reviews I read here (thanks) we skipped the "free gift" aka time share selling desk. The room was in building 28 and came with a washer and dryer that we did all our laundry in. The room was clean, and the pool with the slide and waterfall was awesome. We LOVED watching the staff entertain the kids by the pool. The menu was reasonably priced; we had the meat lovers pizza by the pool. I would give this place 5 stars if they offered free Wifi, because even the cheapest of hotels have this standard. Also, the requirement to strip the beds before you leave is weird (thanks again other reviewers for the heads up) « less

My stay lasted all of mother's day weekend. I stayed here before about three years ago. The check-in was fast and the ladies at the desk were polite and welcoming. Our room was close to the pool, which was convenient. The room was large with two bedrooms, it really needs to be updated though, it looked like it did three years ago! Beds were comfortable, kitchen was clean, bathroom was ok. We had rented a car so it was very easy to find restaurants and shops, and a short drive to the parks. I would recommend this hotel for large families, and if you are staying longer than a few days. « less

My wife and I just returned from a week stay at Mystic Dunes. Overall a very nice place and stay though it had its share of issues. We booked our week through a third party which I believe essentially is a middle man for unsold or in used time share weeks. While we live in the KC area the companynisnbased in NY and thus they had us registered as being from NY ( which we are not) and being time share owners ( we are not). We had booked a one bedroom suite and did not know about standar or deluxe rooms or any of the problems mentioned previously. It pays to check out Trip Advisor! Anyhow, I had sent an email to the resort confirming a king size bed and got a call back the next day. As it turned out, I do not think that the call was in follow up to my email but was done because they thought we were owners and they wanted us to take the timeshare tour. The woman who called, Pati was very nice and started telling me the things we were going to get. We were going to Orlando mostly to bring our daughter back home from her semester at Disney College Program and to take a break. I agreed to the tour knowing what was most likely coming but mainly for a certificate for three days and two nights might be good at one of their properties in England where we are going later this year. We agreed to touring on Saturday morning after checking in on Friday evening. When we checked in, I was not quite ready for the onslaught that greeted me in the lobby. I don't mind waiting but there was just this huge mob of people. As I checked in, I saw a bag with my name on it. It was full of throw away crap. When I asked about the King bed that seemed to cause a little problem but I had the clerk check with the manager. He told me I could pay $25 more a night or he could check with his manager. He wanted to know if it was important to me. It seems that we were in a standard room and got put into a deluxe room which is What we had paid for. We were in building 19 room 209. The unit was spacious and clean but very sparsely furnished and very dated. The bedroom had a very comfortable king size bed and it was quiet and the room remained very dark in the morning. Everything worked but if I were an owner this would not have been acceptable. Saturday we received a phone call to make sure we came to our time share presentation. We went and since we knew what was coming, we were prepared to give up two hours of our life. The good news was because they thought we were owners we got the better sales man. In fact, Elgin was one of the nicest people we met during our entire week in Orlando. Sadly, I do not know how much he said was truth or not. We were told that the rooms were being renovated and that they would not be available until August. cClearly, this was not a truthful statement. After we said no, we got the hard sale from his manger. Then the head of customer service came out and wanted to know why we were down as owners. Then we got the closer who suddenly was able to sell us points for only $0.17/point when five minutes earlier it had been over $4.00/point! We finally got out and the certificate is good for only about ten properties with lots of restrictions. Oh well, the fifty dollars paid for,our gas for the week. We were given owner status which meant we got a star on our room card. We were left alone for the remainder of the week. Throwing towels and sheets into tub before we left and turning on the dishwasher was no big deal. Lots of workers around and everything was clean. There was someone at the front gate every time we came in or out and everything was well lit. Restaurants and supermarkets only a few miles away and Disney easy to get to.
Not a great location if you plan to spend most of your time at Sea World or Universal but quite happy with our time.
For what we paid, a great deal. Too bad we didn't know about the refurnished rooms ahead of time. « less

I was a bit worried to stay here due to reading the previous reviews. However, I was pleasently surprised. We had a nice room, which I do not think was renovated. There were 6 of us in a two bedroom. More than enough space and privacy. I loved the screened in balcony - this was great for the evenings.
The room was basic as I mentioned, but very clean and stocked with everything we needed to cook and clean. I found the beds very comfortable and very cozy. Air conditioning worked fine. The water did not get cold, however, so we had to buy quite a bit of bottled water.
The resort is HUGE. So do not expect to be able to walk everywhere if you are in a hurry. It took us twenty minutes to walk from the front gate to our suite. They do offer a golf cart service to all guest, and they are very prompt. They come within 5 minutes of you calling them.
They also offer a shuttle service to Disney and Universal. This was the only large fault I found at the hotel. The times were so inconvenient and if you are trying to make the most of your time in Orlando, I wouldn't rely on it. I have been to Disney serveral times so this did not bother me as much. The earliest bus for Disney left at 9:30am, which is after the parks open. Also, it was generally full or late as it stops at several other hotels before Mystic Dunes. We found ourself waiting more than a half hour on some days and I know this really bothered some other families we saw. The return busses were also bad times. 4:50pm or 10:00pm. Something in between would have been nice, but it's only about a $25 cab ride back from Disney. We didn't have a problem with the Universal shuttle, other than there only being one pick up and drop off....making it a long day. However, I didn't mind this.
The location of the resort isn't great. There are no restaurants around and they only have one on site. I prefer to be close to Old Town, with a ton of shops and dining choices. Kenzies, which is on site, is okay, but gets boring as they have limited menu choices. Good prices, though.
The pools are all nice and clean, from what I could see. We were located right beside the lagoon pool with waterslide and waterfall.
When we were there, we did see a ton of people golfing at all hours of the day. They also have mini-putt near the golf course. They do have alligators here (which really isn't an issue). They were trying to catch them while we were here, and we only saw one swimming in the pond once. I think they had a few smaller ones as well, from what we noticed.
Overall, I really enjoyed staying here for my 9 nights. I would recommend this to families, friends and couples who are looking to get away from it all. If you are planning on travelling to Disney or downtown or anywhere, I would rent a vehicle for sure. There were people who were driving around the hotel just to get to the pool this place is so huge.
I would stay again as if I had a vehicle. The location in relation to Disney and Universal is good, but not to shops and restaurants if you like to walk (which I do). « less
