We have just got back from our honeymoon - half of which was at secrets Maroma Beach - it beat all of our expectations. We are from the UK and booked via Virgin Holidays (don't forget to ask for an NHS employee discount if booking with them) the virgin team recommended the resort as it is popular with American visitors so standards are kept very high (as opposed to the hotels/chains that are usually more well known with Europeans such as Iberostar and Barcelo). We were not disappointed - there were lots of extras for honeymooners and it was perfect from start to finish. Immaculately clean and friendly. The beach is stunning - little fish swimming about - water sports all included. It is not a 'mega resort' so it feels much more personal and you get to know people.
The food was excellent - in the evening there is no buffet- all 7 restaurants are al la carte and of excellent quality. We didn't go to the Asian or french restaurant as we live in London so we have these as regular options when at home. The Mexican restaurant El Patio was lovely. The World Cafe is worth a visit too - 4 courses - each of which perfect. Breakfast and lunch options good and varied. Also if you arrive late or are tired at the end of the day room service is also included! You could have breakfast and dinner in your room every day if you wanted!
The entertainment was great - the entertainment team are not pushy but are around all the time with activities to do if you want. The shows in the evening are of a good quality (a couple of cocktails first and they seem even better!) There were a few moments where you felt you were at Kellerman's and there was a slight holiday camp feel - but only very momentary - the Scottish bloke who won the karaoke reached almost celebrity status for the rest of the week!
The only very slight negative (and to be honest this is very slight) is that despite having a 50% DEET containing insect repellant we still got bitten by Mosquitos every night. The room service team leave the room doors open while they are cleaning your room and so we assume that's how they got in. But that really is the only negative.
We did not pay the extra for the 'preferred club' rooms - from what people Said who were in them the only extra worth having was the better view - although they got extra cafes and snacks most said they were using the main areas anyway - so may not be worth the money.
So book and enjoy! You will never want to go anywhere else again. « less

Just returned from 9 nights at Secrets Maroma. A really fabulous resort. Had room no 1710 which was standard size ocean front swim up and in our opinion best location in the resort. Patio had sun until about 2 pm and then we headed to the beach. Our pool was shared by just 5 rooms and no one in the other rooms used it so felt very private. Well worth the swim up if you are preferred ocean front as great location, big patio and 2 sun loungers. If you do not get ocean front do not take a swim up room as they only have 1 sunlounger and the patio area really small! Beach Kabana was well worth the $40 for the day - I would do this instead of swim up. We had one of the 2 storey ones which we loved. The entire staff were marvellous and service faultless. They had set up tables in the evening around the pool which were very romantic and private - you could have one if you ordered a bottle of wine! Much cheaper option than romantic dinner as the wine is from $30. Preferred club in my opinion had only one benefit which was the better located rooms. WIFI is free in all rooms now and Preferred club lounge really lacks atmosphere so really could not see the benefits. Would recommend this resort and will go back again. « less

This was our second trip to maroma and it was wonderful. When you go request building 24 so you can have the best Concierge. Our concierge's name was Jean and he was fabulous. He was able to get us a cabana twice at the last minute. Another standout was Antonio, the manager at World Cafe. Antonio planned a special dinner for us and his chef(s) did an excellent job, their food and service were extraordinary. In order for the trip to be perfect stay away from the vacation club sales pitch, they say it is 90 minutes but it was 4 hours. If you avoid the vacation club people you will have a perfect trip. « less

Just back (19th) from two fantastic weeks at this resort. The near 15 hours travelling from the uk could have been better, but it was worth it. From the check in to check out everything was first class. The employees were always smiling and friendly. The rooms were spotless, sometimes cleaned twice a day. The pool, beach and grounds were immaculate. The food was faultless, even the buffet had so much choice. Our favourite was the Asian restaurant and the most friendly of waiters there was Pedro, who sorted out a special menu for our last night which was not asked for but was fantastic. The lobby bar of an evening was staffed by three of the friendliest barmen i,ve ever met, and i,ve met a lot, so thanks go to Elesandro, Santiago and Angel and also the waitresses, especially Lidia. And last but not least our concierge, Yanine, who was always available with a smile and assistance.
Couple of downsides. First is a major one, imo . Why do the management insist on having staff pounce on guests as soon as they check in? Please be aware that these staff are solely there to mislead you into attending a sales pitch for timeshare. If your not bothered, then the (presentation) lasts for ninety minutes, but is quite intense, we were actually advised to "stick it on your credit card" and worry about it later! If you can afford it, great, but PLEASE management, stop this. Second, its not as peaceful as it could be as there tends to be a lot of groups/ conventions that tend to congregate around the pool area. not too bad as they tend to get that drunk that they aren't about in the evening, anyway there are lots of quiet areas and the beach is far enough away.
All in all, my wife and I loved it here and would recommend to anyone.

The "entertainment team" spoiled my vacation. There is a group of people that come on the beach and by the pool yelling "beach volleyball" or "kayak race" for about 15 min before the event. Then every other day the entertainment team brings a big speaker and sets it on the beach for water aerobics that lasts 45 minutes. You cannot nap at the pool or beach or hear the waves because of the yelling. While my husband and I do not drink, we have gone to Valentine Imperial and Spa Adventura and never had this problem. It was a drunk fest but it was not the drunks that were the problem. They advertise 13 pools but there is only one pool area. The hammocks are in the same pool area. There is no where on the property to get away from the loud noise and the yelling. Most of these type resorts have another pool that is quieter or at least some of the outside beds in a quiet part of the property.
The rooms are really nice. We stayed in a penthouse room that had an outside bathtub that we enjoyed. The customer service is below average. The first night we were asleep at 10:00 p.m. and the house keeping tried to come in to turn down our bed. We had locked the door so she couldn't get in but she tried three times by slamming the door open. We talked to security to see who was trying to come in our room and they did verify that it was housekeeping. Then the next day we came in for a nap at 2:00 and our room had not been cleaned so I turned on the do not disturb light so they would not wake us. They called while we were sleeping and asked if we wanted our room cleaned. That happened twice. I do not see the point of the light if they are going to call and wake us up. We love coffee and were excited about the espresso machine in the room but getting the coffee was a chore. They do not refill the coffee when they clean your room so each day you have to call and ask for some. They came three out of five days with us calling once and sometimes twice each time. My thought is ...don't put the machines in our room and then make it a chore to get the coffee. If it is that valuable then just remove the machine. You also have to call separately for incense and bug wipes.
The beach was the best I have seen in Mexico but nothing to see if you like to snorkel. They serve drinks and food on the beach which was nice but doesn't make up for the entertainment team yelling "beach volleyball". There was no chance to relax because of the staff. The people playing beach volleyball were not the issue (even the really drunk people).
I thought the chocolate shop was going to be fun. It was not, you can only get desserts between 400 and 600. If you asked for it at any other time the staff simply says "finished". Who wants chocolate before you eat dinner. The coffee was good from the shop. I read the reviews about the food and expected something great. It was the same food that the other resorts have. We have stayed at the Rose Hall in Jamacia, Sandals in St Lucia, Galley Bay in Antigua, and two all inclusives in Mexico and it seemed about the same to me. I do not mind because I do not expect food out of the country to be the same as some good Tennessee cooking. The only place I had great food was a LaLuna in Grenada.
I hate to be the only negative review but I am telling the truth if you do not want a rowdy drunk fest then do not go here. We make a joke that the two people on the key card laying on the beach in a restful state were really just passed out. There was not relaxing on that beach. It was like Panama City Beach in Florida, jet skis, speed boats, people doing water sports, people hooping and boats right along the swimming edge. « less
