Receptionist just sat there, blank faced. No welcome at all. Was not aware she was ready to 'process us'. Wish she hadn't. Room 308 was abismal. I know there was a gale blowing, but the shash window was vibrating like a machine gun. The wind howled through every join so strongly, the net curtain was kept 8 - 9 ins away from the window by the force of the draft. Had to roll up towels to stuff in every join. Toilet flush had broken, radiator control missing and rad was off. Room was freezing cold. Went for pre-paid evening meal. Mistake number 2. A 3 course meal ended being 'Help your self' Pot of soup with a ladel stuck in it. Main was either beef or liver. Both were in a tray deep in gravy, on the hot plate. The only way of telling which was which was to feel around with the ladel until you 'hooked' a piece of meat. Mind you, should have guessed which was beef because it was the only tray with a yorkshire pudding floating upside down in the gravy! Desert was a three day old meranguie! Luck it was just a one night stop. We got up early so we could leave ASAP. Booking it was last minute and I didn't have time to read Tripadvisor.Big mistake. I will never book anywhere again until I have checked to see what other guests have said. If I could score a zero, or better still a 'minus' score, I would. « less

I stayed at this hotel for a weekend with a large group booking for girls weekend. The food was really nice, But the rooms really do need an update. The furniture in the rooms look worse for wear, The bedding was clean and beds comfortable. If the gardens looked like they do on the website it wouold be a miracle. They were shabby, garden furniture on the floor, weeding needed to be done. General appearance not good. Front of the hotel looks more like a borstal then a hotel. Heating in the rooms not on but they had underfloor heating in the toilets, how bizarre. I know its may but it's still chilly and the room was cold. « less

I stayed once and I won't be staying again, where do I start!? We could not unlock the door to our room, after a member of staff managed to open the door I wish they hadn't! It was like a prison cell, double bed pushed against the wall, no headboard a very claustrophobic bathroom, we decided we could not stay in there so give the staff their due they upgraded us to one of the best rooms in the hotel...the room was very spacious but that's where it ended! A pump on the toilet meant every time you flushed it an awful stench came up from the sink plug hole which had no plug in it, the shower had zero pressure and the water came out orange to begin! Decor was incredibly dated and in much need of a freshen up, the wardrobes were just hideous, the tv was out of the ark...just everything about it was terrible! To top it all off I paid ten pounds for a late check out of 12 and had the cleaner burst in on me at 11...no knock...and I was half naked!! « less

Bathroom filthy, toilet hadn't even been flushed from previous visitors let alone cleaned. Windows not doubled glazed so could hear traffic all night. Heating on full so couldn't sleep, even the cold water came out warm so couldn't get a drink. Tried watching tv but all that came out was white noise. Tried calling reception to complain but just told fully booked and couldn't help. Breakfast in the morning was a disaster. We went at 10 as they served till 10.30. No food left, or tea or coffee. We were told it was busy, they would have known this as it was fully booked. They didn't even care so we didn't hang about. Tried to speak to someone at reception but were told the manger was off. We have sent in a complaint and tried contacting the manager but he is avoiding us. £80 for the worst nights sleep in a dirty hotel. Disgusting « less

Used this hotel for an overnight stop as part of a Newmarket Holidays trip to see a James Last concert. 41 one of us (pre-booked) arrived at 1.45 to be told no rooms would be available until 3pm Not a good start ! We were told that sandwiches and bar snacks were available. A surly (poor-English-speaking) barman (the only person behind the bar) eventually told me where to find a menu. (only 2 availble between 41 hungry people). Surly (poor-English-speaking) receptionist was not able to find extra menus so was no help.
Ordered sandwiches and was then told that, " Chef has decided he/she doesn't want to make sandwiches today". Complaints to reception eventua;lly brought the manager who told chef to make sandwiches. What a shambles !!
Room was scruffy and tired. Ccurtains sagged between too few working sliders. Bath was stained, as was shower mat. Beds were clean and comfortable. Buffet breakfast was excellent which saved the rating from being a disaster
