I booked this vacation at the Gran Melia for our Spring Break (March 22-30). This was a family trip, two adults and a tween child. I booked months in advance, back in the summer. We arrived at the hotel at 3:30 p.m. A gentleman told us to wait in the line for check in. When I saw the line, I nearly died! It went waaaaay back. Even with reservations, we were waiting in line for 1.5 hours!!!! I could not believe this. By the time we got checked in and my husband went to get our RESERVED rental car, we found out that they had given it to someone else. The reason, the rental place closes by 5:00 p.m. When I spoke with someone at the hotel about rental cars months prior, I was told that I should rent from the car rental at the hotel and not at the airport, even though, it is the same company. That way, we are guaranteed parking, though, we found this not to be true one night. Anyway, my husband explained that the reason we were not able to pick up the car was because the people at the front desk were still checking us in. The people at the rental car service were friendly and apologetic and said that they would upgrade us to another car for the next day. We then jumped on the golf cart to proceed to our room. When we arrived at our room with the bellboy, another bellboy was leaving our room and told our bellboy that he had just dropped off some people. They double booked our room! We were so exhausted. By this point it was already 6:30 or 7 p.m. and we had been travelling since 5 a.m. The bellboy felt terrible and had to take us back to the main area of the resort. We had to wait again while they tried to find us a room. Because we had no rental car, and no reservations for restaurants, we had no way to eat. We told the hotel this, and they said that they would send a shuttle to pick us up at 8 p.m. and take us to a restaurant outside of the resort. It was now 8 p.m. and we waited patiently. There was nowhere to wait except this grassy area at the front entrance of the hotel, or the street where the cars were coming in. All of a sudden, the sprinklers went on. We had no choice but to wait on the street. The shuttle never came. We went back to our room and ordered room service. They told us it would take up to 1 1/2, but we were so hungry that we didn't care at this point. We finally ate at 9:30 p.m. It cost over $100, but it was delicious! That was our first day. The first day was pretty horrible.
Day 2 and on---Excellent---The hotel is beautiful. It is very clean. The rooms are clean, but there is a moldy, mildewy smell as stated in previous reviews. Before going there, I thought that it would be due to humidity, but once I was there I knew that wasn't it. The best thing to do is to air out the room. The pools are great, the room service takes a while, but the food is good. We mostly ate out. Don Pepe's (10 minutes away) is a great restaurant with typical Puerto Rican cuisine for a good price. The beach on the resort is also nice, even though there is some seaweed. They have these little golf carts that take you all over the resort if you don't want to walk it, but be prepared to flag them down or they will pass you by. This place is beautiful and well kept, but definitely needs better management. It feels like nobody is in charge. When there is a problem, no one knows who to go to. I could write more, but I wanted to put the most important things in here. Definitely check out the sites. Go to the Yunque and Old San Juan. It's not that far away. Also, we ate out a lot on the street. There are frituras (fried foods) everywhere. You can budget really well if you get off of the resort for eating. One more thing, there were no fridges or microwaves in the rooms. I'm not sure if Red-level has them. Anyway, we bought a little cooler at Walgreens, filled it with ice, and placed things like milk, deli meats, and cheese inside. We also bought bread and fruit. With these basic things, we were able to have breakfast and some lunches inside of the room. « less

We just got back from a spending another 5 nights/ 6 days in Paradise (April 28 thru May3), or should I say; “Gran Melia Golf Resort” Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. I was there in October 2012(see my other review), and enjoyed it so much. We had to return! And it was as beautiful, as we had remembered! The weather was picture perfect, every day we were there. The grounds look amazing as always. And the level of service, we receive is second to none! We booked a Red level oceanfront room with Jacuzzi on balcony, near the Red level – adults only pool, but were told rooms were having major repair to plumbing. So we were upgraded to a huge time share suite. It had beautiful ocean view, big kitchen and dining room and living room and 2 Bathrooms with showers and Jacuzzi indoors and out on balcony. We were a bit away from the resort, but the suite and golf cart pickups more than made up for the inconvenience in distance. There are few people that make our stays special. And I would like to take time to mention them by name here in my post. Ruben LLunes from the red level pool makes our day at the pool PERFECT! There are never any concerns during the day while we are relaxing at the pool, Ruben handles everything. Thanks, Rueben you are the Best! There were new bartenders this time around and hats off, to Leslie and Candido for great drinks and service! And Bill from spa services, great pool side massage – I needed it. Next our butler, Eli for taking care of everything else, dinner reservations, cold drinks in the lounge, helping with checking in/out process maximizing our time actually in the resort and pool. Karina from red level check in, “Thank you” for taking care of everything and making our stay worry free! Lastly, Philip Soto from the Italian restaurant for making our dining experience wonderful..! We were in the restaurant, the night when the glass door broke. We will be booking our return trip to Gran Melia for October 2013, shortly. We can hardly wait to return to Paradise. Thanks to all the staff members that continue to make our stays memorable and sooo relaxing. See you in October…..

My experience at the resort was absolutely wonderful! The staff was helpful and resourceful and always available. The Red level is a must! The service was the best I'd ever experienced at any resort from check-in to check out. Pool-side massages were the icing on the cake (I think only available for Red-level). We had access to our own personal cabanna everyday while on the resort and the daily happy hour was more like a feast! I would recommend renting a vehicle if you wish to leave the resort however, because I heard guests complaining about the cost for a taxi. Club cars were mostly available to transport guests to their rooms. The grounds and landscaping was very well kept and the daily breakfast made waking up a charm lol. This resort is great for relaxation, but not partying as it was a serene and peaceful atmosphere. I plan to visit again. « less

If they had 4.5 stars, that would be my score.
I just really liked this place a whole lot. It was far away from San Juan, but worth being off the beaten path. I thought the hotel was impressively clean, the staff friendly, and the gardens beautiful. You are beholden to the restaurants on offer for your meals. Yes, the costs are more than most places, and they will add up, but this is how the place makes money. This hotel is terrific both for business folks on an expense account or a tourist with a set budget. There are fine restaurants, and there is a market to buy munchies if you want to skip a meal. The food by the pool was good - burgers, salads, what you would expect. The only other restaurant I ate at was the sushi bar, which I thought was very good.
I really liked my room. Big comfy bed. Plenty of English channels on the TV. Big bath. Truly 4 star. Polished marble floors. Loved it. Downside of the room was that it did exhibit a bit of a musty smell upon entry. But this subsides.
Tastefully decorated. Actually, when I inspected the artwork in the room, I was surprised to see some numbered, framed, original prints. One had to have been worth a small fortune.
Pools were fine. Not meant for lap swimming. More for swilling and swimming. Nice to be by the ocean. Not the most majestic beach in the world, but quite a tonic after a long winter up north.
Off the main area, they have these resting places which are divan-type king size four-posters. I sat on one of these and quietly did work on my laptop and got things done. Supremely comfortable and relaxing.
I think I liked this place so much because it simply allowed me to unwind and relax to the max after an exhausting last few months. Maybe my review is biased because the hotel refreshed me. But isn't that what a fine spa/resort is supposed to do? « less

We stayed at the Gran Melia for 10 days for a girls trip. The grounds are beautiful though its out of the way so you will need to rent a car to go in to Old San Juan. The restuarant are pricey and the guards watch to see if you are bringing food on the grounds. You should be able to bring food and or drinks into your room and not be watched and told that this is not acceptable.
The gym was good and was never empty. The workers were wonderful and were always available. « less
