Hilo town is not known for hotel luxury. This side offers a different experience as does Uncle Billy’s. Often the help is friendly. Sometimes they lack customer service skills that upscale hotels tout. Standard rooms are clean but sorely in need of updating. A room upgrade will give you amazing views and more attractive interiors. Expect deterioration in hallways and BUGS! I have never seen any creepy crawlies in the rooms; however. You will also enjoy the soft, clean lava filtered tap water, great for skin and hair. They serve a charming small breakfast of choice of breads for toast with butter and jam, hot drink choices and juice, as well as tray of lovely, large, fresh papayas hulled and halved that you can just dig into with a spoon. You can usually find fresh flowers for your hair in the lobby. The hotel in on Banyan Dr. with lovely trees named after famous people who planted them, and is just a short walk to Liliuokalani Park and Coconut Island where you can stroll or watch local kids dive into the warm waters of the Bay. « less

This was the cheapest accommodations we found available in Hilo, and for the price it wasn't bad. The rooms were clean, the staff very friendly and reasonably comfortable. The continental breakfast was minimal but just fine. Great water pressure in the shower, through the temperature fluctuated somewhat as other people in the building used the shower. Walking distance to a number of good restaurants. If you are looking to save a little money, it's great. « less

I've been staying at Uncle Billy's whenever I'm in Hilo for 20 years at least. The minuses are on previous comments, although sometimes overstated a bit. Yes, Uncle Billy's needs a do-over. There can be mold here and there, it needs a new paint job, and some of the carpet is a bit old. But remember, this is Hilo, the rainiest town in the USA. This is not Kona where it is dry and things don't deteriorate in the dampness. And there was a previous comment about too much noise from birds and frogs. Gimme a break. There are lots of birds in Hawaii and that's part of the charm. The frogs are coqui frogs and were brought here illegally about 10 years ago. Not a darn thing Uncle Billy's can do about it. You are in Hilo, you will just have to deal. Bring earplugs if bird song bothers you.
You can't stay many places in Hawaii for less then $100. If you want luxury, go to the Mauna Kea or somewhere in Kohala or Kona. Uncle Billy's has character and is very local. Many Hawaiians I know, and I know a lot of them, stay here when in Hilo, especially for the Merrie Monarch hula festival in the spring.
Hilo is our favorite place in Hawaii. Very local, not a lot of tourists, and some of the friendliest people anywhere. You are fairly close to Volcano National Park, Kalapana, and Waipio Valley. Uncle Billy's is the best place to stay here. « less

Good value, clean room, clean sheets. Old hotel but I'm sure you can imagine "old hawaii" while you are here. We usually stay in much nicer hotels but this place is just fine for one night. No complaints. Have a sense of humor and everything will be ok. It's a little adventure for sure. « less
