Great location--walkable to many awesome restaurants (love the plethora of cuisines in NYC!) and the Columbus Circle entrance of Central Park. Awesome rooftop pool (with bar) with a great view of the city. My girlfriends and I felt like we were in an episode of SATC . Dated decor and strange layout (inconvenient steps for hauling luggage). If it wasn't for management, I would definitely book here again based on the first two factors alone. However due to a booking problem, a very unhelpful staff tarnished our stay.
The story: I booked through Hotwire. The only booking options were 2 queen beds or 1 king. I requested 2 queens. We got to the room and it reeked of cigarette smoke. No exaggerating, it was as if 5 people had just finished smoking prior to our arrival. I maybe could have dealt with it if given no other choice and been miserable, but one of my travel-mates has respiratory issues that are aggravated by smoke. So I called the front desk and requested a non-smoking room. I was told they were booked and that I should have requested a non-smoking room when I made the reservation. I then went down to the front desk to speak with the manager. I explained that hotwire made no mention on the smoking status of the hotel or that it was necessary to call about it. I then also explained about my friend and said it was necessary to find another room. She said there was (suddenly) one non-smoking room available but there was only one bed. I said that would be fine, but could we then get a rollaway as there were 3 of us and the original request was for 2 beds. She said yes but we would be charged. I griped about this but relented (gotta pick your battles). Throughout this whole exchange with the desk clerk and the manager, the was NO customer service. No friendliness, no courtesy, no apologies. We even had to call back down about the rollaway after waiting several hours for it. It put a damper on our whole trip, so much so that this woman's name (yes, we remember) comes up when we talk about bad management.
So if you choose to stay here, I hope you're not in need of special requests because they are unlikely to care, and if they accommodate you, it will probably be begrudgingly so. « less

The Hotel has a good location. It is fairly priced and has a number of nearby competing hotels which were significantly more expensive at the time of my reservation. It's unlikely to be a place that you rave about but it fulfilled its function. Reception staff and concierge were pleasant and helpful. Rooms were clean and adequately furnished. Free WiFi throughout was really quite good. Sure, the place could do with an upgrade, but prices would surely follow. If you want somewhere to sleep in Midtown, this Holiday Inn is worth a try. My only complaint is that it can be quite noisy - I faced towards 56th Street - but then again few NY hotels are quiet. « less

The air conditioned system is noisy, however the hotel is renewing the rooms. I went with kids and all the employees have been very kindly with them. I don't recommend the parking service: too expensive and you have to wait more than 30 minutes for your car. « less
