Location. The George Hotel is a 300 year old property with a weathered wooden façade and is situated among the shops in the centre of the historic town of Penrith. The town is located at the entrance to the Northern Lakes, and offers a starting point for walking tours in the Lake District and Eden Valley. Newcastle Airport is 75 miles away, with an approximate driving time of 80 minutes. Hotel Features. Oak panelling, tufted chairs and sofas, and patterned carpeting create a Victorian atmosphere in the lounge, where mid morning coffee or afternoon tea may be taken by the open fire. The night porter is on hand to serve nightcaps from the bar, which offers more than 30 kinds of whisky. Complimentary secure parking facilities are available on site.
The Devonshire Restaurant features high backed upholstered chairs and candlelit tables and specialises in dishes made with local ingredients, such as Ullswater trout, Herdwick lamb, Angus beef, and Cumbrian cheeses. Cumbrian Lamb Hot Pot and other traditional pub fare is served at lunch and in the early evening at the informal Oak Bar.
The hotel has an arrangement with the Penrith Golf Club, two miles away, to offer discounted green fees, and can arrange rowboat and motorboat hire and lake cruises on request. Guests also benefit from complimentary access to the Penrith leisure centre, which offers a swimming pool and gym.
Guestrooms. The 35 rooms spread over three floors feature simple decor with pine furniture, light coloured walls and crown mouldings. Amenities include satellite television, direct dial phones, radio alarm clocks and coffee/tea makers. Bathrooms include tubs, handheld showers and complimentary toiletries.
Expert Tip. One of the many scenic walks in the Lake District, the 7.5 mile walk through Gowbarrow Fell passes a spectacular waterfall.
