Architectural Structure and History of the Alp Pasa Boutique Hotel
A large “Osmanli Konagi” ( Ottoman style mansion ) was built about three hundred years ago. The Konak was well known as one of the architectural masterpieces of Kaleiçi ( old city of Antalya ) not only with the architectural characteristic but also with the functional design. The mansion house was established first in the 18th century and modelled on the peristyle house with atriums which was wide-spread in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It was referred in some documentary records at the time of the building establishment that the konak was a reception for rich merchants and important guests who had visited the city.
The imposing gate of the konak faces a wide street running east and west. The street has been used as one of the most important streets of the city since the ancient time and it leads to the outside of the city through Hadrian’s Gate ( historical place in Antalya ) built in the 2nd century in the eastern city wall. There is a peristyle with wooden columns lining up in U-form directly behind the entrance gate. The passage along the columns is embellished with a mosaic of pebbles. This type of mosaic art began to be used in the 9th century BC. The mosaic embellished with a geometric and natural motif is made only of black and white pebbles. The peristyle encloses the forecourt. A cistern is found at the corner of the court. The balneal house on the west side of the forecourt was restored and now it functions as a hamam ( Turkish Bath ) for the hotel guests. All rooms of this two-storey house directly face to the court. While the rooms of the ground floor open into the colonnaded mosaic passage, those of the upper floor approach the wooden balconies. The upper floor is led by the flight of stone stairs from the ground floor. An extension was built to the north side of the main building in the 19th century. The original architectural design of the house was never spoiled by that enlargement. There is a atrium led by a long corridor from the peristyle. Here, like the south side of the building, all rooms on the both floors open into the atrium due to the intention of obtaining light.
The whole space of the house is worked with artistic stone and wood crafts. Some stones which are employed in the old konak originally came from the building built in the Roman and Byzantine periods. The rooms are decorated with the carving wooden ceilings, the lath and plaster walls, and the corner-fireplaces. These features are characteristics of the classic style of the Ottoman architecture.
