Irondale is a city with over a century of Southern Heritage, it is located just outside Birmingham. The name Irondale was taken from a furnace located just west of what is now the city limits. The furnace was first known as the Cahaba Iron Works, but the local folks always called the place Irondale. The furnace was used to make iron, which was fashioned into munitions for the Confederate Army. The furnace was eventually destroyed during the latter part of the War Between the States. Irondale sits in a valley with Red Mountain to its north and Cahaba Mountain or Shades Mountain to its south and southeast. Nearby area attractions include the Southern Museum of Flight, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, the Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens, the Meyer Planetarium, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Birmingham Zoo, the Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, and the Visionland Amusement Parks. The book, and later a film, Fried Green Tomatoes, written by Irondale native Fannie Flagg, is loosely based around the town and the landmark Whistle Stop Cafe. Irondale is also the location of Catholic radio and television broadcaster EWTN, the Eternal World Television Network.

We had booked this room in Irondale before we read all of the reviews. After reading the reviews we wanted to cancel our booking on the spot. The location was near where we were going for a meeting so we did not cancel. We were pleasantly surprised. The room was fine and there was a small fridge to keep drinks cold in the room. At no time did we feel unsafe. The breakfast was only cereal and juice and small buns. We got to the breakfast room and there was no coffee, but we rang the bell and the owner came out and made us a fresh pot. All in all if we were in the area another time we would book this motel again. « less

I swear I saw prostitutes and smelled crack. The parking lot is full of cracks and weeds, so driving up you know you're in trouble. Decor in rooms was awful, old, outdated, and the mattresses were not good quality and had no support and you could feel springs. My friends said I'm not allowed to pick a motel anymore and still make fun of me. We were there to see a band play, and even though Birmingham still has some charm in some areas, for the most part this hotel kind of shows how bad the economy is down there. I did not feel safe. « less

Be prepared to be unhappy in this place. It's in a terrible neighborhood, full of drug deals and very shady people. The hotel itself is old and nasty. Our toilet looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. Smelly carpet and linens, a curtain that was broken and a TV that only worked when.... well it never actually worked properly. No amount of a discount is worth staying in this dump. Avoid it at all costs! « less

The picture on the website really covered up what we found when we opened the door. It was supposed to be a non smoking room, but smelled like a bar. The whole place gave you that slimy feeling. When you take a shower before you go to bed, you feel like you need another one when you wake up. In the parking lot it looked like crackhead station. We paid for 2 nites but I didnt wanna go back there again so we checked out late after the 1st nite and lost the money on the 2nd nite. Wasnt worth it. Just ICKY. That hotel could close today and noone would care(except maybe the crackheads). « less
