Hotel was fine and clean. Probably family friendly in a safe area (police HQ across the street) Avoid the restaurant in the hotel and go elsewhere. I didn't have time to use the pool but it looked great. The hotel has been remodeled and could have been better, but it's Portsmouth so you have very few choices. « less

The sad part is that there would not be another place to recommend staying in the area. Portsmouth doesn't offer much. But for the business traveler, hopefully you don't have to stay long! The fitness center is in desperate need of repair. The one treadmill at its highest speed is barely even fast enough for a jog. And it skips. So it is just a matter of time before someone hurts themselves on it. The other is about 18" wide to run. The business center is beyond outdated as there is no air circulation in the tiny room. And since the door springs closed, it's suffocating and beyond stuffy to work. The single computer doesn't even have Microsoft Office loaded. So the generic program takes forever to load business documents. I waited 40 min for one of my documents to load. And then the computer ended up going into sleep mode. And the midnight desk clerk, Rick, was less than helpful as I'm trying to finish printing my project at 2:15a for my meeting. And he won't help me use another computer to get it done. All he did was offer me a business card to complain to the Gen Mgr, Sally about the issue. And he told me to come back in the morning to ask the daytime clerks to use the front desk computer until the problem gets fixed. So much for customer service! My FedEx delivery came. And I wasn't notified about it until 8:30p that evening. But I will say that the afternoon shift folks were very nice and beyond helpful. Sorry that all shifts do not share the same sentiment. « less

I apologize to you, and I fill bad we let you down. The computer in the business center is a new Windows 8, and the staff has brought it to my attention that you were having problems loading your program. Microsoft Office has been loaded. Our Front Desk staff are always happy to help our guest with their business needs. Between the hours of 7:00am and 11:00pm they have access to other back office computers to print documents for guest. After 11:00pm is when the night Auditor does reports and reboots our Front Desk computers to prepare for next day. The midnight shift does not have access to back office computer. Please acept my apology and I hope you try us again.

I stayed in a King room on the fourth floor facing the street. The room was very comfortable and the view of the Kentucky hill across the river was pleasant. When you leave the room, push on the door to make sure it is latched. The one thing I did not like about the room was the toilet. It was not designed for a grown man to use comfortably. Most modern motels now a days have oval toilets with a horse shoe shaped seat. This room had an old fashioned round bowl and seat. I can see why they had to do this because they chose not to replace the door on the room with the bath tub and toilet when they remodeled. For the door to swing open, it needs the smaller toilet. A set of folding French doors would solve this problem.
This is not a Holiday Inn Express, so no complimentary breakfast. Another area of concern was the stairway doors to the outside are not secure. Anyone can gain access to the inside through fire door by the pool. Most modern motels now require your card key for entrance for all doors except the main one by the front desk.
I would probably stay there again. The location is very convenient for all that Portsmouth has to offer. « less

There are few hotel options in Portsmouth, OH, so I chose the Holiday Inn express over the Comfort Inn based on my previous experiences with the brands and the similar ratings on TripAdvisor. The hotel itself appear in decent condition and the lobby/restaurant pool area appear newly remodeled and modern. On the otherhand the elevator and guest room hallways reveal an older hotel. The rooms were pleasant enough, but I had two major issues 1) the walls were so thin i could hear my neighbors tv until he went to bed around 11 p.m. 2) across the window is a white sheet/blinds, to block people from seeing in, I assume, but that natural light and street lights lit up my room, and the thicker blinds, which could block this light do not cover the window. 3) make sure your door has actually shut when you leave, mine would kind of catch and I'd have to yank it to really shut, but I can easily see how people could just walk away with a slightly ajar door.
The only reason I'm giving this hotel 3 stars vs 2, is because of the staff. The front desk staff was friendly and fulfilled my request for a top floor room and called me shortly after check out to inform me of some left items, much appreciated. « less

We stayed at the Holiday Inn from Saturday 5th May until Friday 11th May and then from Sunday 13th May until Saturday 19th May 2012. The days between were spent in the Cave city area of Kentucky.
Travelling from the UK, we were in Portsmouth to visit our son and his family, who live in the area. Our daughter and granddaughter visited with us but stayed with our son.
My wife and I loved the hotel and would certainly like to stay there again. Both of the rooms we occupied during our stays were spacious, clean and had very comfortable large beds. There was plenty of seating, a good flat screen television, a refrigerator and a microwave. High-speed Internet access was also available. The staff were courteous, helpful and friendly. During the first week we were on the 4th floor with good views towards the rear of the hotel. During the 2nd week we had a room at the front with a very pleasant view towards the Ohio River.
The hotel is a short walk from the Boneyfiddle Historic District, which we didn’t find that interesting. However, Shawnee State University campus is well worth a stroll through, the famous Floodwall Murals are a must to see and there’s a good walk along the Ohio River bank.
We did a lot of walking around town when we weren’t with the rest of the family, but most American people seem to drive. We would have liked to have walked across the new Ohio River Bridge into Kentucky and looked down into the river, but there aren’t any pedestrian walkways. This surprised us, as there would have been pedestrian walkways in the UK. In the UK we live near the Severn Bridge, which is considerably larger than the Ohio River Bridge and there are pedestrian and cycle lanes on both carriageways. As fuel is about 3 times more expensive in the UK it’s probably why Americans seem to drive everywhere. Luckily, we were able to walk to the Portsmouth Brewing Company, the Port City (Irish) bar and a very large Kroger supermarket, where if you have an English accent everyone wants to talk to you. We felt like celebrities! We walked there often!
Hotel amenities include, a heated indoor pool with a hot tub and a relaxing seating area, a fitness center, which we didn’t use, Oscar’s restaurant and a popular bar where good food, as well as drink, is served. The only downside, especially if you’re from England and like a drink most evenings, is that you can’t get one on a Sunday evening. We were so looking forward to a beer and some food when we returned from a 5 hour drive from Kentucky around 8.00pm on Sunday 13th May only to discover that the bar was closed and we couldn’t get anything to eat either. With that said however, we were informed that there was nothing open in town either. This seems to be typical in the Portsmouth area on a Sunday evening. We had to make do with several packets of crisps and a bottle of wine we luckily happened to have with us!
Compared to where we’re from in England, there’s not a lot to see in the area, but if you are in Portsmouth and looking for somewhere to stay we can certainly recommend the Holiday Inn. We will definitely like to return there again. « less

What a great review. I don't know which I want to thank you for first, Liking our Hotel or loving my hometown. I am proud to be a part of both. We look forward to your visit again in the future. Holiday Inn is taking a look into the needs of our guest to give a food service area for guest traveling after hours. Some have already started with the HUB. Look for it in the future, sounds like it is going to be the thing to make travelers fill right at home.
