The room and service was fine, however there are a couple of issues that could use some attention. One, I had asked for and had gotten confirmation that I would have a ground floor room, but on my arrival there were none to be had, not a big deal since I was alone. The second issue concerned me more it had to do with the smoke detector: On my arrival I discovered that the smoke detector was covered by a plastic bag and the battery compartment was open. I removed the bag, correctly set the battery in the compartment, and tested the unit, it worked fine. The issue here is that it is likely that a previous occupant covered the detector and opened the battery compartment, but it appears that no one who works at the facility checked the unit prior to my arrival. This is not a good thing to be left to the chance that a retired firefighter will be the next occupant. « less

The staff at the counter was more concerned with the food they were having dropped off by a friend than checking us in to our room in a timely manner. I should have known this hotel would be terrible as I tripped going up the broken stairs to our room. The room was absolutely disgusting. Every single surface was dirty and had I not been traveling all day prior, I wouldn't have even taken a shower in their gross, cold shower nor used the, I would assume, unclean towel. I slept on my own dirty clothes to avoid having to sleep on their linens - which had cigarette burns and excessive stains on them. The television didn't work (to drain out the noise of every pin drop going on around us). I couldn't wait to wake up early and get out of the room. Will never stay at another Howard Johnson chain hotel, just based on this terrible hotel alone. « less
