I stay at this hotel often. Have always loved it. But I had something happen to me that has never happened before and should never happen to anyone. The front desk checked me into a room. I went up to the room, opened the door and I thought to myself -- Oh-oh, they gave me a smoking room. I could distincly smell cigarettes. But I need to make an urgent phone call before going to the front desk and asking for a non-smoking room. So I dropped my luggage just inside the door and started my call. While I was on the phone, I noticed a pack of cigarettes and a lighter on the desk. I turned around and there on the bed, was some other person's open luggage. The front desk have checked me into a room that was occupied!! Luckily, the other person was not in the room. I can only image the situation if I had walked in on someone!
I quickly ended my call, grabbed my luggage, bolted out of the room and went to the front desk. I told them the room they gave me was already occupied, could I have another -- preferably one that isn't occupied and a non-smoking room. They said, "It's impossible that there is someone else checked into that room -- it's empty. And all of our rooms are non-smoking." I said, "Well then someone forgot to tell the person who is already checked into that room that it's my room. And you might want to charge them extra for smoking in the room." One of the desk clerks took a key and went up to the room. He came down and said a mistake had been made. They gave me another room. No apologies, nothing. Just, here's a key to a different room.
I didn't make too much of a fuss or complaint, but I figured the least they could have done was comp me for my room. If I walked in on a lone woman (or even a man), it could have been a nasty scene for everyone. I was put in a terrible situation, and was lucky that the other person wasn't in the room when I walked in.
But given the complete collapse of customer service that is prevalent everywhere these days, I suppose this is the new gold standard. If you hire inexperienced people, invest minimally in training and investment nothing in customer service training, then this is what we get. « less

Though the Hotel is beautiful the food is LESS than desirable. We did the brunch for Mother's day. We ahd a party of 10 (not a cheap lunch). The server (though he was nice) never picked up plates and we had to ask for refills. Also everything was SALTY. The Chef needs more lessons in food prep. Also the lines were crazy long and they only had one omelet table and one meat table. Most of the main foods were cold. They need to get better qualified Management for the Food & Beverage there to make sure that the food standards are a good as the hotel. « less

We stayed at the Hotel Julien for Mother's Day weekend. What a wonderful surprise. The location was right in the center of downtown Dubuque. The staff was very warm and welcoming and Kory, our bartender, in the hotel lounge was very personable. The rooms are very nicely updated with huge showers, granite countertops, personal Keurig coffee makers, etc. We had Mother's Day brunch at the hotel and it was very good. Katie was our waitress and she could not have been more attentive and sweet. We usually go to Dubuque a couple times a year for various reasons and we will stay here again for sure! Thank you Hotel Julien for making my Mother's Day weekend one to remember! « less

In town for a wedding, stayed in a 2 room suite which allowed for one bedroom and one living area that had a couch turned into a bed (for a second couple). When reserving the room and speaking with the reservation guy, he knew we had 4 adults, yet, once we arrived, there were only 2 sets of towels and 2 coffee mugs and 2 waters. We notified the front desk of 4 people and had to notify them a second time in order to get extra towels, etc. The wi-fi was extremely slow and therefore useless in our room. The room was nicely decorated, large bathroom with 2 robes and a fully stacked snack bar with wine, etc (no price list- we had to call for that). The street below was noisy until 0200 due to the bars, but the sofa sleeper was okay and the beds were comfortable. The towels were rough. Overall, for the price, we expected better service. The accommodations were adequate though. Pretty hotel. « less

If you enjoy staying in "period" hotels that have been refurbished, the Julien in Dubuque is an excellent choice. Room was very good with stained bed spread being the only complaint. Amenities, including bath robes, were appreciated. Again, everything was very good except for the one glaring issue about the stains. Food in restaurant is very good. Gloriously the windows can be opened to allow in fresh air. « less
