Our door frame was bent and split. There was no secondary lock. The outside entrance doors were very similar in that the locking area on the jambs were bent (even though they were metal). Tons of people smoking outside every entrance so you couldn't get somewhere without being covered. Pool was freezing, hot tub was unbearable and both areas were dirty looking (water and all). Workers were very courteous though. « less

I go to La Crosse several times a year to visit family and have stayed at this hotel 4-5 times. As a woman traveling alone, the most important things to me are safety and cleanliness. While the rooms are old and could use some remodeling, they have always been mostly clean. The one exception was a filthy coffee maker. I simply walked downstairs in the morning and got some complimentary coffee in their lobby instead.
On the plus side, I have never had a bad experience with any of their employees. They have all been friendly, attentive, and helpful. The last time I stayed there, I lost a diamond stud earring in the bathroom and thought it went down the drain. I called down to the lobby and they told me that they would send up maintenance as soon as he came in. It was early morning. 10 minutes later, I found the earring on the floor. I called the front desk to let them know that I wouldn't need maintenance. When I checked out, the young woman at the desk was really nice and almost effusive about how glad she was that I found it.
If you are just looking for a place to crash for the night and aren't worried about amenities and interior design, it's just fine. I will continue to book the Brookstone when I return to La Crosse. « less

We stopped here for the night due to booked Best Western and other hoterls in the area. The rooms were very small and the front registration area was dirty and cluttered. Many people were standing outside the main door smoking so we had to walk through that just to get in. The night was noisy. People next door were loud and partying and also out in the halls with no regard for others. The front desk was close enough for them to hear this as well but nothing was done to quiet these guests. The pool was closed and there was nowhere to walk outside since the parking lot surrounded the hotel. In the morning we were awakened at 0630 by the motorcycles that were parked outside our window. I would not stay here again and would not reccomend it to anyone. « less
