The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a branch of the United States armed forces and one of seven uniformed services. The Coast Guard is a maritime, military, multi-mission service unique among the military branches for having a maritime law enforcement mission (with jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters) and a federal regulatory agency mission as part of its mission set. It operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, and can be transferred to the Department of the Navy by the President or Congress during time of war. Founded by Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Cutter Service on 4 August 1790, it lays claim to being the United States' oldest continuous seagoing service. As of August 2009, the Coast Guard had approximately 42,000 men and women on active duty, 7,500 reservists, 29,000 auxiliarists, and 7,700 full-time civilian employees.[3] The Coast Guard's legal authority differs from the other four armed services and it operates simultaneously under Title 10 of the United States Code and its other organic authorities, e.g., Titles 6, 14, 19, 33, 46, etc. Because of its legal authority, the Coast Guard can conduct military operations under the Department of Defense or directly for the President in accordance with Title 14 USC 1-3. The Coast Guard's enduring roles are Maritime Safety, Maritime Security, and Maritime Stewardship. To carry out those roles the Coast Guard has eleven statutory missions as defined in 6 U.S.C. § 468. The Coast Guard motto is "Semper Paratus", Latin for "Always Ready" or "Always Prepared".

The Eastern Shore Baseball League was a Class D minor league baseball league that operated on the Delmarva Peninsula for parts of three different decades. The league's first season was in 1922 and the last was in 1949, although the years were not consecutive, and featured teams from Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. The first incarnation lasted from 1922 to mid-1928 (disbanded in July), the second from 1937-41, and the third from 1946-49. Though the level of play was competitive and many future major leaguers would gain experience in the ESBL, funding the league remained a constant problem for the rural franchises.

After an almost year-long process the Salisbury Zoological Park has been re-accredited through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The process started in the fall of 2008 with the preparation of the application package and filling out the background questionnaire. In completing the questionnaire, the Zoo staff had to review and update all of the operating policies of the Zoo. The review process for accreditation is a very lengthy and detailed examination of all the operations of a zoo. Accreditation not only speaks highly about the level of animal care at the Zoo but it also speaks volumes about the breath of our education programs, dedication to conservation, the animal health programs, animal nutrition programs, the relationships between the Zoo and its support organizations, and many other aspects of the operation of the Zoo. The AZA Accreditation Commission, carefully examines each zoo or aquarium that applies for AZA membership. Only those zoos and aquariums that meet the high standards can become members of AZA. One may ask “why do you go through such a rigorous process, wouldn’t you provide the best care possible for the animals anyway?” The answer is “yes”, we will always strive to provide our animals the best possible care while here at the Zoo but AZA accreditation ensures that we are doing much more than that. You as a zoo-goer can be confident that when you see the AZA logo at a zoo, you know that institution strives for excellence in and a commitment to animal care, conservation and education. AZA-accreditation is difficult to achieve and has only been granted to about 220 zoos and aquariums of the 2,300+ recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Thus, less than 10% of the zoos in North America achieve accreditation! For the Salisbury Zoological Park, AZA accreditation means many things. As one of the smaller institutions within AZA, accreditation allows us to play on the same field as the “big boys”. We are able to participate in AZA’s flagship animal conservation program, the Species Survival Plan (SSP). It is our AZA accreditation that allows us to participate in the red wolf recovery program, the cotton-top tamarin breeding program, the Brazilian Ocelot Consortium, and many other significant animal programs. We are also able to participate in the Animal Exchange (access to specimens from other AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums for loan or breeding). Many of our animal species are available only to accredited facilities and would be very difficult, or impossible, to obtain if we weren’t a recognized AZA facility. AZA accreditation also increases our eligibility for grants, promotes excellence within the institution by continuously meeting industry standards, helps to foster staff and community pride, and increases our ability to attract and retain high quality, professional staff. In turn, the Zoo also has opportunities for collaboration and consultation with AZA colleagues who are top experts in their fields. This network provides valuable information when preparing for medical procedures, updating the nutritional programs, developing new conservation education programs, or keeping staff abreast of current techniques and technologies. AZA accreditation ensures that the animals you see at accredited zoos and aquariums receive excellent care every day. Once accredited, every zoo and aquarium is expected to continuously advance its professional operation. AZA continually monitors accredited organizations, and every accredited zoo and aquarium must go through the entire accreditation process every five years. The Salisbury Zoological Park has been a proud member of AZA and accredited since 1976.
