One may ask “why do you go through such a rigorous process, wouldn’t you provide the best care possible for the animals anyway?” The answer is “yes”, we will always strive to provide our animals the best possible care while here at the Zoo but AZA accreditation ensures that we are doing much more than that. You as a zoo-goer can be confident that when you see the AZA logo at a zoo, you know that institution strives for excellence in and a commitment to animal care, conservation and education. AZA-accreditation is difficult to achieve and has only been granted to about 220 zoos and aquariums of the 2,300+ recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). It is our AZA accreditation that allows us to participate in the red wolf recovery program, the cotton-top tamarin breeding program, the Brazilian Ocelot Consortium, and many other significant animal programs. We are also able to participate in the Animal Exchange (access to specimens from other AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums for loan or breeding). Many of our animal species are available only to accredited facilities and would be very difficult, or impossible, to obtain if we weren’t a recognized AZA facility. AZA accreditation also increases our eligibility for grants, promotes excellence within the institution by continuously meeting industry standards, helps to foster staff and community pride, and increases our ability to attract and retain high quality, professional staff.
