I had stayed at this property when it was managed by Jumeirah Hotels, and my most recent visit took place soon after Marriot took over the reins. While the place had undergone extensive renovations before this property became a JW, I guess most of the effort has been in the lobby areas. Bottom line for this hotel: the standard room is the one of the two smallest I have ever seen in my traveling life.
I am not a fan of the location. Central Part South could be a very exclusive address, but it’s far from anything that I look for when I come to the city. There are few "local" services, eateries, or things to do if you stay in the hotel after dark.
Check-in was smooth and efficient, but it when one gets to the room that the real trouble starts. Mine was so small that it was a real difficult to open my suitcase and an ironing board at the same time. WiFi is complimentary (unusual for Marriot, which usually loves to charge USD15-20 for this service) but it took me half an hour to get it working on my computer. Finally, the high-tech light switches did not work well, and it took way too much button tapping and pushing to darken the room. Bathroom was so miniature that there was little room to put my toiletry kit down. The only saving grace was Aromatherapy toiletries, which I love to use. Bathrobes still had the Jumeirah logo on them. I had used the steamroom in the past, but didn’t check if Marriott continues to offer this facility
I guess the price I paid was near the full rack rate, and the choice was more out of default then plan. From that perspective the value proposition is quite poor, and would not make a conscious decision to return to this property again. « less

Essex House is an old classic hotel previously owned by Marriott and now reclaimed by that chain. It's a great location and has wonderful people working there but it desperately needs updating. The furniture is old, tired and not up to the standards of the room price. The rooms are small and not worth the prices for a premium hotel « less

We came to NY from Ohio for our 21st wedding anniversary and the first trip in some time without the kids. The staff at the Essex House went out of their way to make us feel welcome and help us celebrate. They upgraded our room, helped us with restaurant reservations and surprised us with a superb chocolate and fruit dish in our room. David Rahner (Concierge) and King (Bell Desk) were simply exceptional. While there are many good hotels, people like David and King make the Essex House a great hotel. « less

Stayed at JW Essex House for a week in May 2013. We were really looking forward to our stay and particularly the "JW" experience, we were unfortunately disappointed. Having stayed in the various levels of Marriott over recent years this hotel is yet to be of JW standards. The Ritz Carlton one block down is head and shoulders above the JW. The rooms were a good size for New York but in need of refurbishment (which we heard that this was in progress). One of our major complaints was that despite being advised (in writing) that the executive lounge was opening on April 30th, it was not open when we arrived on May 7th. The staff on-site were varied - some "ok" and some that were excellent (particularly Peter in the bar who was a blast! and Adrian Simpson, Front Desk Manager, who was extremely helpful & went a long way to make our stay more comfortable). I imagine once the hotel has undergone all its refurbishments (Marriott acquired the property in Sept last year), it may well be the place to be, but at the moment it lacks something..... The best thing about JW Essex house is its Central Park location. Take that away and I think customers would be less complementary. « less
