We actually reserved a room at this hotel over a year ago in anticipation of our daughter's graduation at a nearby university. It was the right move to make given the number of people in town for that graduation, and I'm very glad we selected this Marriott property for our stay.
As expected, when we arrived (right after check in time as advertised) there was a line of people waiting to check in. However, the clerks were quick, efficient, and extremely friendly as they worked through all those in line in just a few minutes. I was very pleasantly surprised to be upgraded without asking.
The room was magnificent, with an excellent view of the fountain in City Center. We've been coming down to this area for several years, and we are impressed by the restaurants and night life choices that have grown in this vibrant part of Newport News. As another reviewer said, you can find it all here in City Center and don't really need a car.
The room was extremely spacious and very inviting. I did note that some of the furnishings were a bit worn and dated, but everything was clean and functional. Normally I don't note little things like bathroom mirrors, but I couldn't help but notice that the one in the main bathroom (this suite had two) did not fog at all after taking a shower. Very few hotels can offer that amenity!
That evening there was a prom in the convention center attached to the hotel. Many teenagers decked out in their finest were wandering around. However, I was pleased to note the presence of security, especially in the parking garage attached to the hotel. I'm sure that helped to keep the hotel quiet during the night.
Breakfast was fine, and we especially like the variety of fresh fruit.
Even though our child has graduated, she plans to stay in the area. Great! That means we'll have more reasons to stay at this hotel! I'd highly recommend those traveling to Newport News consider staying at the Marriott Newport News City Center. « less

I recently attended a conference at the Marriott City Center and was impressed by all the amenities, conference space and clean guest rooms. The catering team was extremely creative and presented the most unique, inspiring breaks during the day events, mouth-watering meals and professional staff. The guest rooms were very clean and the associates throughout the hotel were exceptionally friendly, YOU should be proud to work here and be part of a great team! We celebrated my husbands retirement of 47 years with DOD as law enforcement and 42 years as a federal agent. We elected to have the retirement party at the Newport News Marriott at City Center. We wanted our guest to be able to enjoy themselves and not have to worry about their safety.
The catering sales manager Alison Alcaine and the catering staff were exceptional. Alison provided me with all the information and everything was as I was told it would be, no surprises. The catering staff had set up the ballroom exactly as I was expecting plus some. They allowed me to come in to arrange the centerpieces and place them in the corner the afternoon before our special retirement event. The day of the party the staff placed my centerpieces on the tables and placed the gift bags for each guest. I had 18 tables. We chose to have a buffet and the guest were amazed at the quality of the dinner. They just raved about the food. A stage and dance floor was set up to accomodate the right number of guest. Our guest enjoyed the breakfast at the hotel, and with weather permitting the patio outside the bar area and the convenience of the parking garage. It was just awesome. The staff were so eager to please and very personable. Thank you to the Marriott of City Center staff. « less

We recently held our wedding reception at the Marriott, and it was wonderful! Alison, their wedding planner, was so easy to work with, even when we had a couple of last minute requests. The ballroom was beautiful, and the service was impeccable. Our guests had nothing but compliments about the food and service! Our out of town guests enjoyed strolling around the fountain and the City Center shops during their stay at the Marriott. Our wedding was an amazing experience, and Alison and the Marriott played a huge role in making it so memorable! Thank you!! « less
