I was in town at the last minute to see some friends and due to "Memphis in May," had a hard time finding a room at the typical Hilton hotel or SPG hotel. Embassy in East Memphis was my best bet. I should have known something was not ideal when I could not find a parking place just to check in at 6 on a Fri Night.. I actually had to park illegally on a corner just to check in! I then went to the HHonors desk only to see that due to the crowd -- and it was NOISY -- that they were not honoring their HHonors desk. The couple at the desk were actually arguing and haggling over something for a good 15 mins with the poor clerk. When I finally did make it to the registration clerk 20 mins later, things went smoothly. There were no bell- staff and no luggage carts. So I moved my car to the back parking lot and hauled my luggage in.
My room was adequate, on the 5th floor. Though I am Diamond status, there were no amenties offered. There was a welcoming letter on the desk in the room, but it was addressed to someone else.
I do not stay at Embassys very often. In the past decade, this was my 4th or 5th. So I guess I do not know what to expect. I did note that they place seem waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over-crowded. There HAD to have been more than 4 people in each suite as people were EVERYWHERE and noisy, and children seemed to run around un-attended. At cocktail hours both evenings I was there, I have never seen so many people with braids, fades, grills, sagging pants, and noisy, noisy drama! Geesh! Length of wait for free buffet breakfasts: generally 30 to 40 mins (another geesh!).
Their exercise room was small but the equipment seemed to be in good shape.
The highlight of the hotel, in my opinion, was an extraordinarily hard-working member of the staff, "San," who was bartender, bus-person, and after the meals and drinks were over a VERY thorough scrubber of the tables. In the midst of this circus, she actually had a positive attititude and warmly and genuinely invited me back to the hotel when I am next into town (not likely! but the sentiment is excellent). Management, she needs to be promoted!!!!!
Because my flight out Sunday was not until 6:30P and because I am Diamond-status I checked with the front desk to arrange a late check-out on Saturday. I was told that this was not possible that 1:30 would be as late as it would be. I asked her to check with the MOD and was told that the MOD was not on-site. (I don't blame him or her!) I was told that she would try to get permission for a late check out by paging the MOD. I never heard back. I checked with the desk then Sunday for the late check out and was told that 1P would be the latest possible. I gave up and packed and left immediately, not being able to do much work at the airport.
This was not a pleasant hotel stay and it will be a lonnnnnnnnng time before I stay at an Embassy again -- and then only if all other hotels are not available.

The rooms are standard fare Embassy Suites. I have stayed at the hotel on 3 occasions and each time I remember that perhaps I should try another HH property in Memphis. Compliments: 1. Front desk is amicable; manager reception staff and breakfast staff was very good. 2. Location good for better dining. Issues: 1. The train ‘whistle’ (aka horn) blows throughout the night (think 1 AM, 3AM etc). Not sure if rooms on the other side of the hotel are quieter, but all three times I have been on the same side and had a poor night’s sleep. As a business travel, sleep is key. 2. I am a big fan of taking the stairs. To my disgust, the bottom level of one of the stairwells contained a personal use item (condom) used, lying inside the hotel door. (Really gross!!) As this door is not accessible from the outside (only from inside), I’m guessing it had to be an employee(s) using this area. I mean, what guest would choose a nasty stairwell when they’re paying for a hotel room?? I complained to the AM ‘manager’ (?), who stated he would look into it. (Albeit, not very apologetic!) Needless to say, I wasn’t going to check to see if he actually had the stairwell landing cleaned! I would caution any female guest to DO NOT USE the stairs). I still wonder if this was escalated to higher management. To me it is a big safety issue. Very big! 3. Parking is limited, spaces were small. On each visit I ended up parking in the neighboring Hampton Inn, to avoid being boxed in by larger vehicles. I welcome any comments from readers regarding other HH full service properties in the area. « less

My family has stayed at this hotel twice. Overall, it is pretty average. The location is convenient. The inside of the property could use some renovations. Our main issue with the hotel was the clientele that the hotel seems to attract. Both times we stayed here, there were large groups (family reunion type events) where they were piling 8+ people in the rooms. It's not that I care how many people sleep in a room. But, the overcrowding makes it impossible to use the pool, enjoy breakfast, or even use the elevators. Not really much the hotel itself can do. But, it was enough for us not to go back a third time. I would not rule out the property based on its own merits. But, the folks that seem to frequent the hotel make it less than ideal. « less

The staff was friendly and helpful, but the hotel is in need of an update. The bed was comfortable, but the bedding is outdated, and some of the furniture is showing some wear. The biggest problem with this hotel was the NOISE. I could hear the guests on both sides of my room, plus there were many groups of kids running up and down the hallways, slamming doors. The open atrium style of the hotel adds to the noise. Not only did I hear the noise on my third-floor room, I could also hear the kids in the hot tub on the first floor. « less
