We just returned from a 4 day vacation to Hollywood where we stayed at the Beverly Garland. We loved this hotel! The grounds, courtyard, pool area, lobby...all very beautiful and nicely tucked away from the "hustle & bustle" of LA. We really enjoyed ending our long days of touring Hollywood by relaxing in the hot tub at night. Others have complained about the hallways being too dark and yes, they are dark but who cares?! We didn't come on vacation to spend time in the hallways! The rooms were nice, very clean and soundproof. Our balcony had a great view of the Hollywood Hills. The hotel is on the freeway but large pine trees obstructed our view of it and the noise didn't bother us at all.
We ate at Tula's twice and the food and service were both great.
We also loved the fact that the hotel provides a free hourly trolley that takes you to Universal Studios and will also drop you at the Metro (train station) if you ask. We used the train to take a trip to Hollywood BLVD. It was only one stop away on the train and cost $1.50 each way. It was safe and quick...much cheaper than taking a cab!
The only issue that we had was, one morning our toilet became clogged and wouldn't flush. We had to call the front desk 3 times before someone finally came to fix it. He advised that he had a very busy morning and was apologetic about it. He was forgiven :) LOL
I can't wait to come back to the Hollywood area in the future and when I do, I will definitely stay at the Beverly Garland again! « less

This is quite an old hotel which seems to be undergoing a name change - internally things were branded as "The Beverly Garland" but elsewhere (on the corporate website, for example) it's listed as Universal Studios Holiday Inn.
Anyway, the hotel accommodation was fine, although it shows signs of its age in places (such as the air-con units only having a cold/warm setting, rather than specific temperatures). My room was located on the ground floor, overlooking the rear parking area. Although there was no noise from outside, there was a fair amount of noise from the corridor as people gathered nearby to use the elevator.
I stayed here as it was near to Universal Studios; there was a free shuttle bus which ran hourly. This made getting to the Studios as easy as could be - no need to worry about parking!
There's a small shopping mall a 5-minute walk away, with a large supermarket and other shops as well (eg Starbucks). As a result, I had no need to use the onsite restaurant. « less

Our family had to vacate our house due to termite fumigation over the weekend. On Sunday night our two little ones stayed with my MIL so wife and I could have a quick getaway evening at the Beverly Garland.
I booked through Priceline.com and got a great deal. Before we checked in, my wife saw a review from Dec. 2012 that said the hotel had bedbugs, so several days before our reservation I called, left a message and got a call back within 24 hours from the manager (who's name escapes me now). He spent the time to explain the hotel's approach to the issue and it was very reassuring. Big thumbs up there, right off the bat.
When we checked in on Sunday night, the front desk staff, James and Shawn, were very helpful and accommodating, even when my request for a quiet, nonsmoking room with/a king sized bed somehow got overlooked.
James was able to upgrade us to a room on the top floor of the Portola Building that had a king bed. Second big thumbs up to James.
The room itself was very nice, it seemed newly redone and had beautiful ceramic tile flooring and a nice, modern bathroom (shower only, no tubs in this room but that was fine with me). It was clean, amenities were excellent and included free wifi, a non-service bar refrigerator and a big flat-screen tv (yay, we checked in just in time to catch the latest episode of Game of Thrones on HBO).
We brought a bottle of wine with us but forgot a corkscrew, so even though it was past 11 pm., a call to the front desk brought us what we needed within 15 min. or so. Thanks for that rescue!
The bed was comfortable, the room temperature controls were easy (touchscreen thermostat), the room was very quiet and after a long weekend away from home with two kids under 3 y/o, the respite at this hotel was a welcome change. It was quiet through the night.
Checkout was a breeze (I went to the front desk instead of using the quick checkout option) and I noticed a lot of tourists roaming about, waiting to go to Universal Studios or on Hollywood Tours.
We were only there one night so make of that what you will, but the customer service was outstanding, the room was top-notch and I really got a sense that management is very much interested about the myriad aspects to caring for the property. I even got a nice good morning hello from a landscape maintenance person while bringing luggage down to the car.
The only eyebrow raising issue to the stay is the $15/night parking fee. IMO it's too high and since parking is not covered and not secured (anyone can enter by pulling a ticket), I don't think it's a justified expense. However, parking fees at decent hotels seem to be unavoidable in the LA area these days so I'll just accept it as a part of the cost to stay at a respectable hotel. That said, the extra expense didn't diminish our overall satisfaction with the Beverly Garland. « less

Ashmorzone: We appreciate the feedback. Los Angeles is very much a car-centric city and to really get out and about to see the sights - a car is necessary or we can set our guests up with a car service or sightseeing company. Our hotel is conveniently located as a home base!

We loved staying at this hotel. The service is great! The staff are lovely. The accomodation is spotless! We will come back to this hotel next time we are in Los Angeles. The location was handy to shops(5 minutes). I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for accomodation close to Universal studios as they have a courtesy coach which takes you right to Universal studios and back to the hotel. « less
