Well I was back in Bangkok after a year, decided to go back to the Holiday Inn on Silom Rd after being in the Hilton last year. The Holiday Inn is not sited near the main tourist sites, is more in the Business district, fine for me, but it is only a short walk to the river ferry or BTS station (10-15 mins. for slow walker) so can get around to the sites you would like to visit as a tourist fairly easily.
This is a better than average Holiday Inn. As I did before when I stayed here I went for a Club room. It’s the same size as the other rooms but a few more whistles and bells in the room, is on a high floor and free drinks and snacks all day in the lounge and a free breakfast there in the AM. The cost is not a lot extra either maybe £20 or $30/day!
Staff are really friendly and willing to help, with any little needs or information. In the lounge there was personal attention all the time, with food or beverages etc they seem quite disturbed if you actually get up to make a coffee for yourself!
Room was clean and had been reconditioned fairly recently, well within last 5 years, but still looked fresh. Bed was exceptionally comfortable as it had a soft mattress cover that you just sunk into, wonderfully soft, but with good support underneath from the matrass itself, a feature out of the Intercontinental part of the chain I think!! Bathroom had a lovely large shower “room”, room for two if need be!!!, there was a separate shower head over the bath too. All areas were lovely and clean and I could not fail them in this department.
The food I had in the restaurant was OK but nothing to rave about. However, there was a good looking buffet, with lots of Western or Asian choices, for 800 Baht!! ($30), I think, but I did not try it. After dinner I then had a free coffee in the Club lounge, saved me a few bucks!!
Had a hire car with GPS and drove in from the airport, would be possible without GPS as straight forward route but it means you can concentrate on driving rather than trying to map read, which is critical if you drive anywhere in Thailand as in towns there are soooo many motor bikes everywhere weaving in and out!!!! Parking, both for self and valet, at the hotel was free of charge!
So overall good hotel nice and comfortable, with good customer service but it lacks the setting and views of the hotels on the River (Sheraton, Hilton & Oriental) but one advantage it has lower prices.
Well would I go back? Well I did, and still of similar mind it is a good choice with reasonable price but not the best view in Bangkok!
So if you want a nice comfortable hotel with fair price go there but if you want “a room with a view” try one by the river. « less

Over the years I have stayed at this hotel several times and it has never disappointed. The real asset of this hotel is the professionalism of the staff, their readiness to assist and their lovely smiling faces. On just entering the hotel you get the impression that they are pleased to see you and are grateful for you opting to stay at their hotel.
The hotel has two blocks one older than the other. The newer one is of a higher standard than the older one but in each the rooms are spotlessly clean and well provisioned with toiletries. Two free bottles of drinking water are provided each day.
The buffet breakfast has an extensive range of items catering for the different tastes of their guests and is served in comfortable surroundings.
Within the hotel complex there are several good restaurants and bars offering food and drinks at “outside prices”.
The hotel is within walking distance of Surasak BTS Sky Train station which provides easy access to many of Bangkok tourist sites. With some determination one can also walk to the night market at Pat Pong and the Sala Daeng BTS Sky Train Station.
Being located on the congested Silom Road at times during the day can make vehicular access to the hotel a bit of a problem. For me the Sky Train provides the best access.
The hotel is located a short distance from the tollway making access to both Bangkok airports relatively stress free.
The hotel is well suited for the business traveler as well as those at leisure. Working desks are provided in the room with internet connections. It seems that in some instances the connections are free as they were on the floor I stayed in. It other cases a charge is made.
An outdoor swimming pool is also available on one of the floors.
I generally book Holiday Inn hotels on their web site. It has been my experience that hotel booking agencies do not offer better rates. However the Holiday Inn web site rates do vary from time to time generally being higher close to the date of stay. However on this occasion I obtained a “Last Minute” rate the day before my stay which was extremely competitive. It is worth noting that the Holiday Inn booking site does not include the various taxes and service charges which are added to the rate indicated. But this is made clear on the web site.
The hotel hosts the crew of several airlines but this in no way affects the services offered to independent travelers. Perhaps it is also an indication of the high standard of this hotel that they stay at this hotel.
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel as a place to stay for both the business and leisure traveler to Bangkok if its location suits. For me it really is "a home away from home". « less
