Where to begin?
First, I've stayed at most of the resorts at Lake of the Ozarks and sadly, the word "resort" is a misnomer that can be easily applied to all of them. That being said, this one might be slightly better than a few of the other ones that have the word "resort" in their description.
I checked in here for a two day conference that was being held at the nearby Country Club Resort and Spa. Please see my review of that for an appalling description and you will understand why. On the weekend that I stayed, I got a special "Buy 2 nights, get one free" that came with free passes to eat breakfast. I had never stayed at the Lodge of the Four Seasons, I had a friend that worked at Spa Sheiki and she had always relayed there had been housekeeping issues and several years ago, 2 people drowned in the pool. But, I absolutely knew that the Lodge would still be better than the other alternatives and with the special rate, I thought I would give it a try anyway.
The lobby is rather unique and the gardens with its myriad of pools and waterfalls are nice, but service in this hotel is unimaginably lacking. At check-in, which seriously took 20 minutes because the only clerk working the desk had to give what can only be described as a very long-winded spiel about the property, along with a map and way too many pamphlets. All this time I'm thinking I could have taken a nap next to the fire on the lobby bench, but I just drove two hours and my luggage weighed me down till my back hurt. I kept thinking that someone, anyone might help with the luggage, but he was busy talking on his cell phone while the valet smoked a cigarette.
So, I finally get the room key, walk through the bar passing a hallway of mirrors into a maze-like, cat walk mezzanine thinking that the place looked deserted, dated and tired. I finally find my room and do the proverbial room inspection.
Here is a list of what I didn't expect to find:
1. A dirty, used towel on the bathroom floor behind the door. 2. A hair tie on the floor next to the doorstop. 3. Mold and slime inside the water reservoir in the coffee pot. 4. Mildew in the shower corners. 5. Dirt and grime on outdoor chairs, which stained my khakis. 6. Chewed gum on the mattress. 7. An empty water bottle under the bed. 8. A lot of dust bunnies under the bed. 9. Something that looked like a needle in the corner of the closet. 10. Dust and hair behind and under the tray that held the ice bucket. 11. Melted ice in the ice bucket. 12. Corners so grimy, that housekeeping has not used the corner tool in a few years. 13. And, to top it off, the ceiling started leaking on the last day. Yes, water dripping down the mirror and the television. 14. Stained and dented lamp shades. 15. A nonworking electrical socket. 16. A weird white waxy substance, that looked suspiciously like candle wax pooled up on the night stand.
Now, for the rest of the hotel.....
1. The breakfast buffet, which was mercifully free because we had the passes, was barely eatable. The gravy had that weird looking film that forms on top after it has been sitting out a while. Ditto, the scrambled egg and cheese casserole concoction. The bacon was all fat, dripping with grease and looked undercooked. The biscuits were like miniature hockey pucks. I dared not consider the sausage links. The potatoes were also a fail. It was a good thing it was free, because there is no way I would pay $15 to eat any of it.
2. The movie theater would have been great if you could have actually heard the film and they didn't charge you for popcorn. I would have enjoyed it much better, except that some people kept playing with their cell phones and actually kept talking throughout the film. One couple in particular, who looked intoxicated, kept rattling the ice around in their glasses from their drinks in the bar. There was something particularly irritating about this couple, who arrived for the movie late, mercifully left early and seemed very self-absorbed and oblivious that other people might be trying to hear the movie. I was appalled that she started masturbating her boyfriend......While I understand this wasn't the fault of the hotel, maybe they need to send a monitor in every now and then to make sure things are copacetic. They did leave after I glared at her for a solid 10 minutes.....
3. Spa Sheiki might just well be the most over-rated spa I've ever seen. I've been on at least 6 cruises and have been to several spas. Each cruise I've always, always spent days in the spa as I hate, hate crowded public areas on cruise ships, so I think I can make some comparisons. First, the spa bills itself as one of the top rated in the Midwest. It pales in comparison to the few I've been too, including a Marriott property in Texas. It is also more expensive than many of the Elemis and Aveda properties that I have frequented. It, too, is also unsanitary - if I believe my very close friend who worked there for 3 years. I did visit this property and found management to be a bit snooty, the receptionist snooty, and the massage to be just too average to be worth the exorbitant price I paid. The waterfall is nice, but you couldn't make me get in the swimming pool. Several years ago two people died in that pool and had been in there for a while before someone found them, so I wasn't comfortable knowing that.
3. I did order room service despite the menu selection being a bit weird, it was promptly delivered with the usual accoutrements -- but it wasn't very good , even though it came from their steakhouse restaurant which again was suspiciously over-priced. Sadly, the dirty tray and used dishes sat in the room for an entire day.
So, while this property didn't meet my expectations -- It is unbelievably still better than the other self-styled "resorts" in the area. Unfortunately, mediocre is the only thing that comes to mind.

This place has it all for a person who's looking for a peaceful escape from the city. Plenty of activities, fresh air, oh and the scenery!!! Gorgeous views!!! My husband and I stayed in the Lanai suites. Directly across from us was the beautiful japanese garden and to the left of us was the lake view. Sunrise and sunset was to die for. The service was excellent. Everyone here is so polite, friendly, and helpful. If I didn't know any better I would have thought I was back in Florida. I will be making this an annual trip, or if I need a quick weekend getaway! « less

Wow, thank you for the 5 star review! It’s these kind of reviews we love to read and share with the team that works hard to keep the grounds looking good, down to the team that helps keep the resort clean. Thank you for your review, but above all your patronage. We can’t wait to welcome you back.
