Our dilemma: traveling with 7, arriving late afternoon with two departing the next day, five of us the day after. Not being a fan of big, impersonal, chain hotels, my first thought was to stay in Munich, and either try to arrive to turn in rental car by 0430 departure day, or stay in Munich first night and at the Kempinski for our last night. Upon further deliberation, the latter didn't make sense--who wants to spend their time packing up and moving? And who wants to try driving and parking in a city with such great public transportation? So we went straight to the Kempinski and turned in the rental car early (parking there costs E27 or so). We'd come from Dachau at about 1600, and first impression was excellent. Very cool architecturally, and whoever is responsible for front desk staff and bellmen should get a promotion--uniformly friendly and helpful. They reinforced decision to turn in car, helped us park temporarily right out front, explained the train system including the pass for 5 people, pushed us to try the hotel restaurant (which we did and it was very good), and made sure our scattered party was put in touch with one another.

Room was very nice. Big bath and the first washcloths we'd seen in Europe :). Also the first bathtub. It seemed like a spa day after two weeks of small showers. There was a desk, plenty of outlets for three of us with a multitude of devices, good lighting, and pretty much what you'd expect from a 4 star property. Very nice bedding and comfortable sleep reported by all 3 in my room. I didn't hear a single airplane. And the window opened! (That can add a half star for me.)

Why is it that the B&Bs, cheaper hotels and hostels can provide free internet, often free parking, and the high end hotels slap you with fees for same? I think wired or wireless was E12/24 h. I had an xcomglobal mifi, so didn't use their internet. Just so you know, I always knock a star off for value when I encounter these fees.

How many stars to give for location? Well, if you want to be at the airport, it's a five. If you want access to downtown, though, it's still a good strong 3. The hotel is located right at the terminal, which is super convenient on departure day. Although they'll offer to schlep you to your terminal to check bags, there's no need as you can grab a cart and schlep yourself in 5-10 minutes--probably less time than you'd wait for the bellman to arrive. There's a pretty nice mall right under the hotel and you can save your souvenir shopping til last minute if you've not already purchased trinkets for the kids, colleague covering your butt at work, etc. Just don't expect the cuckoo clocks,crystal, etchings and other treasures on offer through the rest of Bavaria. (Kids! There's a McDonalds!!)

And the best thing? The S-bahn terminal is right there, too. I was glad we'd purchased the group ticket at the hotel desk because there was quite a line at the ticket window. Individual tickets can be purchased from machines, and maybe the group ticket, too. but "zwei bier, bitte" is the extent of my German. It couldn't be easier than hopping on a train minutes from your room and hopping off at marienplatz about 40 minutes later. I was very glad we'd decided to spend our two nights at the K.. Highly recommended especially with crack-of-dawn departure. « less

“Nice Airporthotel”
