From the moment you give your keys to the valet,(I caution you it isn't cheap $40. Plus a night. But this is SF.) you enter another world. Gaze at the garden beyond the checking desk. Your room is well appointed and immaculate. Try a traditional Japanese bath complete with stool and wooden bucket. The view from the 15th floor was magnificent like every thing else at the Hotel Kabuki! « less

A huge room for a very reasonable price adjacent to the Japan Center (great restaurants) and walking distance from Filmore Street shopping. If you like to hike, take Filmore up the hill and down again to Union Street, and back. It's a short bus ride to downtown or BART. The staff is exemplary. We definitely will stay there on our next trip to the Bay Area. « less

We had one night back in San Francisco after a road trip so plumped for something a little different here at the Kabuki and were not disappointed by a Corner King room on a high floor (14th?). We liked the traditional style decor with rice paper sliding window shutters, chez longue, big old bed, traditional style bedroom etc. Great view out of course and pretty good value for such a big room too, though the room decor did feel a teeny bit on the tired side. THe art in the lobby and traditional garden are a nice touch, though we skipped breakfast as we made a taxi dash beeline for the famous and flaming tasty bread at busy Tartine (ask off menu for a hunk of bread with butter and jam to go with your flat white). The location is brilliant - Japan Centre right next door - we had a brilliant shiatsu at the very friendly family run Japanese therapy centre there and thoroughly good sushi/saki dinner and trendy Fillmore (going north from post st) only a few blocks away. If you are into Jazz its also only a short stroll (south along Fillmore from post st) to the famous venue at Yoshi's (though shows are early here so don't turn up at 10 expecting a late session) and several smaller jazz pubs/clubs - we had a nice couple of single malts in front of a fire, getting to know plenty of locals with brilliant live band playing at the Sheba Piano Lounge. « less

We always stay here when in SF - especially if we are going to deYoung or Legion of Honor - pricing is much more reasonable than near Union Square, fairly quiet area, beautiful gardens & love the Japanese tub! The balconies are not that much to write home about, and unless you think you will spend a lot of time in the room or outside looking out, not worth it to pay extra ... but the rooms are always clean, the staff always helpful, the lobby is tasteful and calm. Added bonus is being just a few blocks from Fillmore District which is wonderful - lots of bars, shops, restaurants - felt very safe in the area walking to and from hotel. Have to disagree with some of the reviews that say furniture is old and uncomfortable - the bed and pillows were very comfy to us! « less

The staff and the decor are just wonderful. Freddy, the bellman greeted us warmly and was a great source of information and help to a couple of SF newbies. The desk manager was just as helpful. We had a corner king which was large, comfortable and very nicely decorated. While not on the trolley line, it didn't seem too far away if you are a walker, which I am not. There are some very small housekeeping items that need to be looked at by management but they wouldn't even come close to keeping me away from this place. All in all, I feel very comfortable recommending Hotel Kabuki to my fellow travelers. « less
