Jesmond is a great choice for staying around Newcastle. It's leafy and mostly residential with a lovely park (Jesmond Dean Park) which you must see if you get a nice day. It's five minutes walk from the Holiday Inn. The hotel is also close to a metro station, and only just outside the city centre. We had a car and parking was easy on-site and at no additional charge. This hotel used to be a Swallow Hotel and had a refurb a few years ago when changed to Holiday Inn. Check-in guy was very helpful. (as opposed to the less-than-friendly check-out girl this morning). The layout is quite extraordinary as I guess buildings have been added on over the years. Some parts seem to be old victorian housing and other parts from the 60's or 70's. This meant that finding the room was tricky at first and actually seemed impossible to get from the room to reception by stairs, and easier by the lift. Asking a member of housekeeping how to get to reception was even frustrating for her and in the end she just said easier to take the lift! The facilities are all fine and the rooms (judging only by our room of course) have been fitted to a high standard when the refurb was done. The room was a little on the small side, with airconditioning, comfy bed, fridge, safe etc. There is wifi in the room, but they have these vouchers you need to keep collecting from reception to be able to use it. The bathroom was tiny, but had everything you needed. The shower was more a trickle than rainstorm due to low water pressure. The main problem I had with the stay was not the hotel, but the guests! Friday night was quiet, so no problems. Saturday night, the place seemed full of drinkers. There was lots of noise outside the room all evening, but seemed to settle down by 1ish. Then at 4:30am we were woken up by someone knocking on all the doors and then hammering on the next door room trying to get in for around 15 minutes. I was getting to the point of dressing and going out there and it stopped. You can't blame the hotel for the guests though and I guess that it happens at all the mainstream hotels on Saturday night. I must say that usually I'm a fan of Holiday Inn and regularly stay with them on business. member of priority club etc, but in this case I'd probably choose to pay a bit more and check out the Jesmond Dene House Hotel next time. « less

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights. It is a nicely renovated facility. The bars and restaurant were excellent, and the staff we spoke to were very nice. The food was very good. The bed was very comfortable. However, the room was cold, especially the bathroom. There was insufficient space to hang our clothes. The lighting was very poor - there was nowhere with adequate light for my wife to apply her make-up. In addition, the hotel was "technically challenged". Their WIFI didn't work with either of our Android smartphones, although we could connect in the major stores and cafes in the city. Their card reader would not accept my credit card, despite me being able to use it in every shop and restaurant we visited in the city.
I enquired about the wifi problem shortly after our arrival, and the receptionist tried to help, to no avail. When we checked out and I complained about our stay, the receptionist was very pleasant and said that he would report this to his manager to see if he could get me a reduction on the bill, and that someone would call me later that day. Nobody called me. When I returned home I wrote a letter to the manager of the hotel with my complaints, rather than write a more public critique, and he/she didn't even have the courtesy to respond! To add insult to injury I got an e-mail from Holiday Inns asking me to rate my stay -- and every time I tried to do this, I got a message that they were experiencing technical difficulties and the relevant web site was unavailable!
Such a shame as with a more responsive approach to their customers, this could have been a pleasant memory, despite the limitations of the room.
We'll choose somewhere else next time we visit the area. « less

I stopped in this hotel for one night when I was going to see a concert at the metro radio arena. It was a short taxi ride away from the area a the location was easy to find, and handy for amenities, there was loads of parking, the staff were really nice and helpful, the rooms were immaculate and stylish, the bars were very nice and the breakfasts were top class! My only complaint is that the window in our room kept making sounds during be night because of the wind, so me and my boyfriend woke up a few times, however I mentioned it to the receptionist and she assured me someone would check it out. I would definitely stay here again, and recommend it! « less
